The Man was and is awsome player. Everyone I knew back in the day that had enough brain cells not to get sucked into disco, Knew who he was.

Being a bass player, myself, all I can say to this is that NO bass players ever get the respect they deserve! It's a damned shame, too.

Bow to the mighty bass! Revere the bassist in your band, today!

He sure got plenty of respect from me! I love the bass lines in "What Is And What Should Never Be."

Great musician all the way around.

Bassists in general don't get enough recognition unless they're lead singers and/or songwriters. When I think of Led Zeppelin I immediately think of the other three band members before I think of JPJ. Another bassist who doesn't get any respect is John Deacon from Queen. He was phenomenal and also an excellent songwriter as well. Some of Queen's greatest hits were written by Deacon but few people even know his name. Later...

Commercially, he is the least recognized of the 4 guys, but within the bass player community, I can't see why he wouldn't be well-recognized.

He never got his due. But it wasn't a musical thing. He was surrounded by three huge personalities so he never stood out. Most people who appreciate how good JPJ was are musicians. I know the first time I heard The Lemon Song it blew me away.

The breakdown in "The Lemon Song" pretty much defines his mastery over the electric bass. I was in a band that played "The Immigrant Song", and for whatever reason, the drummer just had to play it as fast as he could. The problem: during that "On we sweep with threshing oar..." part there's a really fast ascending bass lick that for some reason was impossible for me to play when done faster than the recorded version. I mean, he played it stupid fast! I was only in that band for around three months.

John Paul Jones wasn't much for stage theatrics. He seemed to be the "serious musician" of the group. Who could blame him with that ugly chick running around squeeling like a pig...wait...that was Robert Plant.

LMAO Mr Plant was not a squealing pig, he was more of the screaming tree variety...

Jimmy, the vocals should never be, but the rest is good.

Heh heh, I hear you on that. That was around 2005, a singer named Ric. We actually did a Zep tribute at the I-Rock with him but that was about it.

any bassist that gets respect and recognition is probably in a band that isn't playing "classic rock" y'know where the bass hides behind the guitar, not that I really know much about that stuff......I don't really listen to it to often, unless its metal, but then I'm more into the drums wondering how I could have played it differently, and just what I'd tell the rhythm guitarist :D

WTF? JPJ was hiding behind Page? Entwistle was hiding behind Townsend? I think you should expect some backlash from that comment.
