well when I finally get lucky enough to have a band thats worth making merch for, simple to start y'know black and white shirts and stuff of that nature and maybe even "combo" out the shirt and cd for 20 bones...that way you stand a chance of getting more exposure
This is cheesy but it works. We used to have a bunch of 3" frisbees made up with our logo on them.(about 12cent each in bulk) we'd throw them into the crowd during our set. then when our singer would pimp our t's and cd's he'd tell the crowd anyone showing a frisbee got the cd for the discount rate of 10$ (the actual price likewise) but every time we threw them we sold a ton of cd's

It all depends on the Shirt, design, the band and the price...depending on the gig. If the design is really killer, you can sometimes get away with printing a one or 2 color on black that will really save you in setup costs, and printing. It looks classy and sometimes less is more, don't worry about trying to print on high quality Shirts, people expect band shirts to be cheap and %100 heavyweight shirts are hot as hell on stage to wear anyways....and don't show off female fans "racks" as good.
Drunk people don't care if your shirt is %100 preshrunk heavy weight cotten or 50/50 anyways..they are buying it for the look and design.
There are some places that will print you up ultra cheap and lightweight black , made in mexico $3.00 shirts front and back one color (white on black...remember...white on black usually needs a Flash so another white can be printed on top to make it bright.
Shop around, some screen printers will work with you, one even let us come in after hours, make the screens and do the printing, folding and so forth ourselves! Always good to be friends with your local screen printer..most of them are into music too.
If you are playing bars, $10 is a great price for T-shirts...it's a lot easier to get someone to pull out 2 Five dollar bills or a wad of 10 ones than it is to get someone to pull out a $20 bill that could buy a bunch of drinks. Plus it's better to sell 50 shirts for $10 in one night at a little club than 5 shirts for $20
Consider it advertising for your band, more people will see that T-shirt if someone wears it to a big concert than will hear your band at a local radio station interview.
