I love Page, never really considered his solos quirky.
For quirky guitar playing I lean toward Tom Morello of RATM and Audioslave. His use of pedals gives me fits to try and cop.
Along these lines the Edge of U2 has done some interesting stuff. His use of delays.
Andy Summers of The Police has done some different stuff. His use of chorus pedals.
Lately Ive been playing in stereo at home thru my Line 6 Delay Modeler pedal. I dont know if I will incorporate this live or not. Ive ussually got to much going on running around the room to be sitting there kicking a pedal in and out and tapping out the beat. But Im having a lot of fun on my own with the delay and the whammy pedal. The last gig I used the delay pedal for Sweet Home Alabama and turned it into a U2 sounding song. We had a guest singer and he commented Ive never heard it done that way before. I said I will probably never play it that way again, but it was fun in the moment.
I look at playing music like painting. A lot of times the little quirky things you do are what makes a song unique in some way.
Im with Kramer, most of my solos would be considered quirky. When I first learn a song I do try to cop the lead licks over time thou they morph into something totally different.
Bill will get me, but live and in rehearsal I play my guitar real low. At times it does make me a sloppier player, but Im cool with it and I guess I love guys like Page, Slash, Zakk Wylde who play with low slung Les Pauls.
You just gotta have some kind of vibe or attitude going on and Im stuck in the 70s arena rock era.
