If I had my way, garage band would also be victim of your remote control...

Whats wrong with garageband?
Same as any other music software more or less, except easier to use.

repressthecadence wrote:Gaming, especially party gaming, has gone mainstream now. It's not uncommon, and I think it's safe to say that it's here to stay. While it is impressive to play through those hard Guitar Hero songs on Expert level, it is a completely useless talent that won't likely get them anything save a few pats on the back.

Regardless, anyone remember the saying "Drum machines have no soul"? I don't think robots are going replace us as musicians until we figure out how to endow a soul upon non-sentient things. Something tells me we're a bit off from that. What we need to combat the growing garbage pile is more music education. Preventing more people from falling into that trap will hopefully give them a tendency toward music more "real."

I agree, however I play guitar bass, and drums, and have since I was 7. although guitar hero is just a game, i think it can help with your hand endurance. I used to play it all the time, and when you are finally able to play on expert, a lot of the songs feel like you are really playing them, but that's only on expert. Still nothing comes close to the real thing, and even though you get a cheap thrill from rocking out a song on GH it gets old as hell, but it does make your hand stronger.

I feel like the only good thing that comes out of Guitar Hero for practical use might be developing some semblance of finger memory. Those stupid controllers hurt my hands more than they've helped me.

Well..... on a positive note. I was in the studio wednesday. I played bass with my "old" drummer friend. (he's 18 and we've been playig out since he was 13). Then I played rhythm, then leads. I put down the lead vocal, doubled it, then sang a harmony. The engineer came over the headphones and said. "I had to make sure that autotune was off! You sounded so perfect on key I thought I had left it on!" Holy making me feel great batman! :D

Z - in GH, you get a generic guitar-shaped controller. There are buttons on the neck, & a lever where you would pluck the strings. The idea, as best as I can determine, is to match the picking speed on the lil lever while you press the buttons on the neck, of which there are, I think, maybe 4. There is no choice of "fret," & the whole thing seems to revolve around how quickly you can flick the lil lever, or match it with the picking of the particular artist you're emulating. Very little music about it at all.

It's pap for the non-musical fans, yet somehow some ppl seem to think that that's all there is to playing guitar.

What's with all the hate on the games? Fck that. I think it's great. Introduces a whole lotta people to good rock/metal music, instead of pop/rap/radio/mtv shyt.

I'd rather have a 10 year old listening and enjoying a Zeppelin song that he's never heard before GH or RB.. and then the xmas after, he asks his parents for a real guitar.
I got no problem with that. What's yours?

Andragon has good points. I see both sides of it. When the 'tards think they can play because of the game is where I have a problem. I don't have a problem with people playing games I just can't imagine picking a game over playing music. That is due to me having very little spare time as a working husband/father.

Well, some people just don't have that musical "gene" in them. But they enjoy the music and pseudo-playing it, is fun for them. I think it's more fruitful than shooting people with a massive arsenal of weapons in a game [it's not that I don't do that sometimes, but yea :) ]

I've played RockBand bout 15 times now. It's fairly simple to get better and end up with a relatively high score. Now, let's see.. my 15th time playing the guitar, I was probably making the most horrid noise in the world while playing a simple intro.

Plus, it's a fun group game. Lots of fun.

People are putting up their "performances" on youtube..
Like its something of their accomplishment:

I do agree that it's better than the blood and guts killing games, Andy.
