Bands And Albums.

I was gonna call this "the worst guitar solos," but let's face it - there are lotsa instruments out there.

"We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions" - as much as I like Queen's guitarist, I HATED this thing, & it still annoys me every single time I hear it - it just doesn't make it for me at all.

"Another Brick In The Wall Pt II" I think that's the one - "We don't need no education" - I almost worship Gilmour, but this wimpy lil lead, once again, doesn't fit the tone of the song. The thing woulda been better without a lead at all rather than this one, imho.

Most of the leads in Skynrd's work just seemed to me to be exercizes in hammer-on/pull-offs. Never liked 'em much cuz they weren't very melodic or creative, more often than not.

Now I'm sure I've offended more than a few of you, but do try to remember that this is merely personal opinion.

I'm curious about other ppl's on this subject, so do tell!

Strangely, I still like to hear them now and then.

I like a clean simple lead. Especially the ones with the long drawn out notes that quaver with good vibrato. To many leads in rock are just a blast of a bazillion notes. No soulfull feel at all.
I like a lead played like BB King would do it. Or the streight forward style in Alice Cooper's Schools Out classic.
That being said, I am a simple guitar player. Perhaps that is why I like the simpler yet soulfull licks and leads.

The best worst guitar lead that sucked on purpose was probably the one in Dr Hooks classic "Cover of the Rolling Stone".

Actually, HJ, I think that one is a great solo, cuz it fits the overall tone of the song. That guitar speaks to me. It echos the lyric perfectly in its own language, & that's exactly what I look for in any lead.

Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit and Heart Shaped Box. Don't bash. I like em.. kinda. The heavier stuff is better than Smells like ass spirit. They did surprise me once when I heard a song by them which had a nice fat sloppy short solo.

Brian May NEVER played a bad solo in his life.

I will agree with philbymon on the Queen solo, but NOT the Brick in the Wall 2 solo.

And Fisherman Bob said it 1st, Brian May doesn't play bad solos. He just played over your head. LOL You couldn't comprehend his greatness because F. Mercury was way too gay and his vibe was turning you off.

That's probably true. I am not turned on him. However, I could also just be annoyed to death by that song. I've never been a big fan of the big anthem songs.

That solo was so bad I couldn't believe they had the guts to release it!

Never felt that confortable with the keyboard solo in the original recording, although I must admit that it grew on me as time passed. It's weird & quirky & doesn't seem to fit the tone of a song about JFK's life & death.

I'll draw your fire for you, Phil. I read the title to this thread and thought..."We are the Champions." I hadn't even read the OP yet! I love Queen, but that is one lead that I could have done without. I think it has to do with the general vibe of the song. The verses talk about someone paying their dues and succeeding. I find that inspiring...and then, all of a sudden, you hit the chorus, and Freddie sings "No time for losers", and I'm reminded of a high school bully. The lead follows the vocal melody, and gives me the impression of the bully's friends chiming in. It totally turns me off from the song.

Damn, I got issues!
