V-8 Juice is a hangover cure. A friend told me about it years ago and it works!! Now I luv the stuff!. Even when I have no hangover. I like to put worstershire sauce in it too. Tastes like a bloody mary.. kinda..
"a clear glass straw.

I prefer the 1000dollar bill myself. Would Martha approve? 8)

Only if it is freshly pressed and you roll the bill face side out.

Lol, I'll remember that. The next time I have one. Which will not be anytime soon, unless I win the lottery.

I don't drink at all. I think it is bad for you in excess. In moderation it is a temptation to be excessive. It lowers you inhibitions to make healthy choices. It lends itself to letting your body and animal instincts rule your behavior instead of your mind and your morals. The health benefits in alcohol can be be found in other food and drink. I like my health and intend to stay as healthy as possible for as long as possible. Alcohol isn't part of that. Good luck!

I have a really good time. A consistently good time with my wife, family, and ROCK without the use of mind and mood altering input.

Well...I have some things to say about mind-altering stuff, that I'll save for a complete thread, cuz I see that as I write it & research the subject, it's tending to be quite a lengthy thingie.

But, in short, Paul, it ain't necessarilly such a bad thing, when all is said & done, as long as, as you said, it isn't done to excess. Altering one's perception has been done by man, and many many other creatures, for as long as life has existed. There are reasons for these natural chemicals to exist. They are meant to be used. They can indeed benefit you, and I do believe that the chemicals have been developed to benefit the plants as well.

Anyway...watch for my upcoming lengthy thread on the subject. It'll probably take me awhile longer to write, but I hope to make it worthwhile.

I have no doubts that my opinion will be in the minority by a long shot. I'm used to that fo sho! As I said even in moderation you are tempted by those things to use them in excess. I don't think those things are always meant to be used. nicotine for instance.

Neanderpaul:
As my association with you is online deep only. And not being into your personal space, I must wonder aloud.
If you and I were of close proxininty association. Say as in a band project together. Would your opinions of my use of "mind altering substance" ( heretofore known as M.A.S.) affect our relationship. If I chose to smoke a cigar during a break, or have a beer during a practice session. If were to blow a J after the show and sit back to enjoy the next band.
Provided the condition of course, it did not run afoul of our shared goals.
I wonder at your true heartfelt reaction.
Do you allow me that freedom that you have declined for yourself?

Because of my previous problems with said substances I do not hang around tempting situations. I think those things are bad for me and bad for all. I don't tell people what to do. I do share my views on things. I just wouldn't be able to hang around with you if you were doing those things. I couldn't be in a band with you because of those things. It limits my potential bandmates and being a one man looper operation has related benefits. The void who I work with locally are substance free. The father in that father son team does drink beer on occasion but never does around me because of my issues with it.

Fair enough answer. I can respect that. Anyone that up front about his or her feelings would get my respect and cooperation as well.
I've always been one who is going to do as he damn well please. Yet I do try to ensure my behavior would not present a stumbling block for others.

That's like saying that "because one child is allergic to peanuts, no one should eat them."

I can certainly understand your choice for yourself, and your desire to only be around sober folk, considering the assumption that you have problems with the aforementioned "MAS's." I appreciate that your rules of behavior for others do not extend to times when your bandmates aren't near you. That shows a healthy amount of respect for others on your part, Paul.

I still contend that there are some ppl, perhaps even most, who benefit from them.

Paul, I have a feeling drinking caused some tragedies in your life. Maybe not. But it did in mine. I've felt the same way at first. But I realized that when I'm drunk I just laugh a lot and say the silliest things in the world. Same reaction when I get high (weed, hash or a few shrooms.. sometimes). I don't hurt myself or other living beings. Actually, it lightens up the atmosphere for pretty much everybody.

It also helps that I have a strong stomach (*touching a wooden table :P *), so I don't end up hugging toilets for hours just because I had a few shots or so.

Oh and Paul, I don't know why you say that drinking influences your health choices... maybe, choices in general.

While peanuts are clearly bad only for some I truly believe that alcohol is bad for all people. I know that sounds alien to most (esecially here) but I can't change what I believe to suit most.

I believe drinking alcohol and taking drugs is poor stewardship of your body, mind, time, money, and influence. I believe all of those things are on loan to us.

If you loan me your bass I will take way WAY better care of it than I do my own. Likewise my body is just a loaner.

Andragon wrote:Paul, I have a feeling drinking caused some tragedies in your life.

Actually it didn't. It just made me waste precious time, squander my talents, stay in self destructive modes and dead end jobs. I found it made me tolerate crap I shouldn't have. And I made stupid decisions. I really didn't pay for it other than wasted years.

Andragon wrote:I don't hurt myself or other living beings.

It is my opinion that you do hurt yourself with those things.

There are posative physical and negative physical effect properties of all that our chemical make up comes into contact in this environment. Right down to the purest water we drink. The air we breath.
The atomic, electricto chemical fire we are, is fueled by energys directly and indirectly from our sun. And it exists in everything we consume in some form.
I have seen people destroy themselves physicaly and mentally by simply drinking too much water.
I would choose to use what is around me (as long as it is legal) while attempting to not let it use me.

I never drink at rehersals I think that just causes everyone to waste time.
I have a few beers at gigs but never in excess.
To me the music has been and will always be more important than the drinking or partying. There have been times in my life when I have consumed way to much of the afore to mentioned M.A.S. but I usually catch myself and stop. Music is an art and as such I don't usually say something to my fellow bandmates about their use unless it effects the band.
Thru all the trials and tribultions of life;
2 divorces
death of family and friends
loss of jobs and career problems
break up of bands

The one constant has been my kids and MUSIC it has seen me thru all of it and kept me grounded. If and when I drink and party it is always in a safe enviroment (at home or with a designated driver) for mine and the general public's safety, and I have been known on occasion to over indulge but that is my choice (hangover and all). :D
