I'm not much a fan of it most of the time, really. Yeah, good thing you weren't trying to compose in that interval centuries ago. They'd have maimed you haha.

Here is a 1 mil $ question to a trained ears: What scale do I play on the first track where the slow tempo kicks in?
3:53 - 5:00
Cheats are here:

Bonus question: how is that long note on a feedback is achieved?
(Chris, knows the answer!)

Track's not loading. I hate my school's internet connection. Maybe it'll work for me tomorrow if someone doesn't beat me to answering by then. =/

I want to see if a trained musician can figure it out. (I am sure I could not either) I will post correct answer in a day or so.
CHEAT: The scale, or scales are not pentatonic and none of the popular ones.

On quick listen at work, I'd say Phrygian.
(sounded like some chromatic and/or wholetone mixed in at one point)
Or hungarian ostrich minor.

WHO CARES WHAT SCALE YOU ARE PLAYING IN.
If the guy can play well, you'll take him.
If the guy is filled with theory and he is otherwise sounding dull and lifeless, you won't.
Play in whatever key you like, if you sound like sh*t that's all anyone will know.
I know a guy who plays nothing but DREAMTHEATRE. He's a great technical player, BUT HE SOUNDS LIKE sh*t.
Want to join his band? I don't think you do, as even if you like Dream Theatre, he can't stop changing key in an atonal manner, as opposed to melodic changes.

You can be self-taught and know more than an educated muti-credentialed individual. The person I would hire is one that has a personality, easy to get along with and willing to do thier job regardless of how mundane or how gorifying iy may be. I would hire the musician who is willing to work just as hard for an event where there is no audience as they would for a larger venue.
Experience doesn't always mean college degree. I know a guy, a drummer, who got gigs on top of gigs. He worked in the steel mill during the day. He got the gigs because he could " hang". He was easy to work with and fun. He had talent and experience. He communicated with the audience as well as the band. The more "advanced" people who I perform with have the same qualities although they have more education.
Either way, they gotta make me sound good

It's about the sound.
If you sound like a Gregorian chant on guitar.. not so good.
If you know what you like and can incorporate that into your personal style, I'd say your good to go.
If you know all this theory and it sounds like it is straight out of the can, I don't honestly know how you can use it to your benefit.
If it doesn't sound true, you know no one will even think it is. You'll be labeled another Satriani clone and that will be the end of it.
FEEL = most important. Speed = not so important.
If I could play with GREAT FEEL and PHRASING, speed isn't a concern to me.
