Hello Jessica,
Just been listening to your music on profile; I loved the flowing tones of Gira con me... whatever that means? I assume it is Italian but am just guessing.
I wish I had half your voice, though I guess in a lower register might suit me better... I struggle always with the singing of my songs, and sometimes think it might sound better if I just spoke them, but it is fun to do the lot yourself... I mean to write, sing, instrumentation, and record.

The other day a friend of mine was almost imploring me to accept that I cannot sing; I said, yes I know I can't sing much, but it happens to be the only voice I have at this time so it will have to do!
Some people appear to think that if they point things out to you, you can instantly fix them!

Hello Mark, we all have different voices and in my humble opinion that is one of the things that makes us unique.
A lot of people think Willie Nelson is not a good singer and look at the accolades he has racked up over the years, no matter how good or bad a singer you think you are it is simply a matter of opinion, if you enjoy singing don't let anyone tell you that you can't. If people like Willie Nelson, Bob Dillan, Leo Kotke, can make a fortune singing in my opinion anyone can.

Every once in a while a truly great singer comes along like Pavoratti, Steve Perry, Rick Emett, Freddie Mercury, and make us all look bad in our own eye's and this is just a matter of my opinion.

So when you good people out there that are recording and you hear your own voice coming back at you thru those monitors don't cringe embrace your voice and be proud of what you have and make the best of it, because you are unique and God made you that way. Music is food for the soul thats why we do this, us musicians, there are always going to be nay sayers telling you "ah you can't do this or that" and that is why when you guy's and gal's here me say you have to have thick skin, in the music biz you have to be able to take critisizim but you don't have to let critisizim stop you from doing what you love that is your gift from God.

I don't have to rate my music. I know it's good. If it wasn't I wouldn't play it for anybody. Later...

Well....it DOES help if you can actually hit the frikken notes. I can understand tonal issues, but pitch & timing are always gonna be necessities for singers.



As far as "rating my music," I do that all the time. It's nice to have outside opinions once in awhile, just to keep me humble, & to keep things in perspective, but that's one of the reasons I post stuff right here, & play it for friends. I almost always play new songs for ppl in a private setting before I take them out to the public to get their reactions. It just seems to make sense.

Occasionally, though, you write something that you just feel so confident in, so comfortable with that you just go for it. So far I've been lucky in that I' haven't had ppl tell me it sucks or anything (yet).

I just assume that people that are on here have some experience in their craft, have ya'll ever heard the definition of kareoke, someone once told me it is Japaneze for off pitch
Most singers when they start out are off pitch and have bad timing, but that doesn't mean they can't learn pitch and timing, except for a few that are truley tone deaf. That last post was for aspiring singers and for everyone else because it can be difficult hearing your voice coming back at you.
The first time I heard my voice it freaked me out (you see I am a Texan)
and I sounded like a hillbilly no disrespect intended. I thought oh my god!
so I started to work on my accent and now it is a lot less subtle, not that I am ashamed of where I am from Ya'll no I'm Texas proud. But if you are a performer it is something you want to be subtle unless of coarse you are Larry the Cable Guy

Around here, the word "accent" sounds like "ack-say-yent!"

We have very few single-syllable words in WV. The diminutive of my name sounds like "fee-yul." "Bush" sounds like "boosh." "Push' = "poosh." "Oil" = "urrel." "Wash" = "warsh." "Sink" = "zinc." "Damn" = "day-yum." And there are very few words with "g" in them, unless it starts the word. "I's" sound like "ah's," or short "a's."

Spelling things phonetically around here is next to impossible. The following sentences are examples of my poor attempts, but it's fun to try.



"I pushed her down, and she got up and kicked me in the shins." = "Ah pooshter day-yoln, ay-yund shay gawt epp ay-yund kee-yuct muh-ee yen duh shee-yuns." (typical sentence heard around here, btw.)

"Have you eaten, yet?" = "Jeet jay-yut?"

"It's in there." = "Ee-yuts ee-un day-er."

"May I help you?" = "Heppya?"

"I don't know. = "Oddle-doh"


It seems totally random, whether a word will be truncated or stretched out, and both consonant & vowel sounds are rarely what they should be.

It's like learning a new language, and ppl get very sensitive when you can't understand them. It sets you apart and makes you one of "dem furreners" or "dem day-yum city foke," so it's best to train your ear before you set out to make friends with the locals, and whatever you do - limit your words to as few syllables as possible!

I'm going to write a book about how to survive in the sticks, one day, and the use of improper language will most likely top the list of "must-do's."

Funny stuff dude. It's like that here too in southwest VA, and in TN when I lived there. I had to really lose the accent when I moved to Florida for a while..
