Robin - lotsa ppl layer stuff for real, with real life instruments & voices & environmental sounds & everything. I've done it meself. Ain't no big thing. It just takes creativity & time & a bit of developed ability & that certain "wanna."

The alternative is to play with blocks like a small toddler & produce stuff like this.

Modern technology has reached the point where we can make this choice for ourselves. Do you want to be a musician or a loopologist?

I'd much rather be the former, cuz I think there's a lot more creative input from my own warped core, & thus a lot more meaning to it, a spiritual side, even, if you will, that bursts from my life's experiences & my soul. I can produce stuff just as flashy, or as danceable, or as complicated & busy, if I put my mind to it. Or I can make it simple and sweet, too. When it comes from me, though, from start to finish, I certainly feel a much bigger thrill.

When I'd spent that hour or three slapping those tracks together, there was no sense of awe in what I'd done, no great feeling of accomplishment, & no sense of timeless legacy. I want that, dammit!

Where's the legacy in something that you've slapped together from other ppl's hard work? I'd like to be remembered for creating my own sound, my own songs, my own work.

Just one piece of music that seems timeless, that works universally, that isn't just another flash in the pan to be forgotten tomorrow morning, that transcends current styles & fads - that's what I want from myself. It's a tall order for anyone, but it's what I almost always strive for when writing (when I'm not being silly or overly self-indulgent).

Examples of this kind of thing are rare, but I'd include "Bridge Over Troubled Water," or "I Feel Good," to be among them. The song that anyone can relate to, the "forever song." I don't think using other ppl's sampling will get me there, do you?

Well f**k me senseless!

And I was pissed off when RAP artists started laying samples of real songs over RAP beat. Now this really blows.

Thank you for opening my eyes on this crap. At least now I not so easily fulled by a good demo and surprise when guy comes in and can't play his own demo. (Happen to me just a few days ago)

I am with you on that one. This is reason I do not play in cover bands anymore. My own work, and those who are in my band - or nothing.

gotta love this technology stuff....as an aside if you have a midi pedal you could always play a song on your strings while kickin a synth around I've known TOOL to do that in at least one song...makes up for their guitarist just being an over glorified bassist
