Oh no! You must use the Ivory as it better compliments the rosy hue of your burgundy crushed panne suit. What Would Martha DO?

Andragon - Peppers are not bad for you in any way. Look up Cayenne, it has a reputation as one of the best and most useful herbs in existence. Several uses, but good for the digestive system, equalizes circulatory system, acts as an antiseptic, keeps colds away, great stuff and no it has no detrimental affects, but can be risky if you already have ulcers. Otherwise Cayenne is one of the best things you can eat, along with garlic. No such thing as too much of either.

It can give ulcers and it's not the best for the colon. Trust me; I've had friends and family who were told by quite a few different doctors that it all boiled down to how much spicy food (pepper, spices and marinated stuff as well) they consumed in their lifetime.
But yea, I know of its benefits as well. I know people who go bat shyt when they see peppers or spicy food

Paleopete:
How do you go about consuming that much cayenne?
Do you eat it on everything including you fruit loops?
Or do you take in capsules?

sans, from what I understand, the chemical you seek in cayenne is capsicum. It exists in jalopenos, cayenne, & the very hot scotch bonnets & habeneros, but not in many other peppers. You can take capsicum in capsule form, & it is supposedly perfectly safe for your guts, if you don't already have an ulcer. It will not create an ulcer in an otherwise healthy person. In fact, there have been some who claim that it will kill or otherwise thwart the bacteria usually responsible for causing the ulcers, & it may also help to keep ppl from getting acid reflux, as long as ppl don't overeat (which is the most often cause of acid reflux disease).

sans - Mainly I use dried & powdered cayenne, tabasco or habanero just like most people use black pepper, which I never touch. I just use more of it. I also grow and eat all of the above, (except habanero, too hot so I don't care much for them fresh) and yes I put it on just about everything. One of my favorites is a variation of breakfast burrito- eggs, cheese, sausage and mushrooms, a little sour cream and enough cayenne to make most people run screaming for the ice cream. Wrap it all in a tortilla and I'm a happy camper.

I have used it in capsules before, but usually I just put it in my food. IN extreme cases, like trying to knock out a cold before it gets a good start, I'll put about a teaspoon in a quarter slice of bread and eat it, 5 or 6 of them. It's hot, yes. But the next morning the cold is gone. I've also used the vinegar from a jar of pickled (home grown) tabasco for the same purpose, just drink a shot glass full or three.

That's medicinal now, not seasoning, nothing fun about it but it works. Otherwise, I just use it as seasoning, but usually more than most people would ever think of eating.

phil - You're right, it's capsicum, an oil produced by several members of the cayenne family. Great stuff, very good for you, and virtually harmless except in the case of existing ulcers, and as you mentioned I also think it probably helps knock out the bacteria responsible for the ulcers.

Acid reflux is just plain old everyday indigestion, renamed so pharmaceutical companies can create DRUGS for it and make lots more money. A half dozen spearmint or peppermint leaves will help a lot, and simply not eating a huge meal and slowing down when you eat will go a long way too. There's another herb that is good too, and I can't remember which one, I never get indigestion so I never use it. Also a big reason for it is the stomach does not have the right balance of enzymes to aid digestion, most of us should also be using some sort of supplement to get those enzymes back, they and the bacteria necessary are killed every time you take antibiotics. Acidolpholus (SP?) is one of them.
