punk rock has my heart.

its so hard nowadays to find raw TRUE emotion. the underground punk scene is one place ive found that. i always hear these bands like nickelback, where you can tell the singer is trying to convey some sort of emotion, but it just sounds so...hollow.

in terms of actually playing guitar though, as ive gotten better, ive developed a taste for blues and psycho/rockabilly styles, as well as older, unique punk styles like iggy pop.

grey boy allstars, pretty cool. P-Funk and James Brown are still my favorites as far as funk and soul go.

punk got me into music. Ramones, Black Flag, Bad Brains, Minor Threat. i prefer punk bands that were/are punk in the "ideal" sense, not the "chugga chugga hardcore" stuff.

Saccharine Trust is great. so were the Wipers. talk about a band that Nirvana ripped off!

the Stooges, totally. new album out this year with Mike Watt on bass! recorded by Steve Albini so you know it's gonna rock.

anyone here heard of Captain Beyond?

Megadeath? Aren't they fronted by that humble and modest guitarist Dave Mustaine? :D My old guitarist was a big MD fan but I never could relate to the bulk of it. he did however turn me on to Chris Poland's Return to Metalopolis which I always have time to listen to.

Yeah, Dave Mustaine I feel is one of the greatest guitar players in the world. I've heard he's hard to deal with in a band, but seriously, I wouldn't care. I would let him write everything haha. I love everything Megadeth has ever released (except for The World Needs a Hero and Risk) Everything else is amazing. Chris Poland is a bad ass guitarist too!

I never really got into the Melvins. I dont like them, but I don't hate them. I like doom metal, but I do not like sunn o))) at all. I saw them with Celtic Frost and they bored me. Same notes for 45 minutes straight. I didn't like it.

yeah, you really have to be into noise and soundscapes to be able to get into Sun O))). do you like Earth?

the Melvins are to odd and experimental to call them anything really. stoner rock is really cool i think. do you like Sleep or Om?

i've been listening to reallt old Reggae, like Dennis Brown and Lord Creator and the Tennors and stuff like that. Bob Marley is great, of course, but i really like the older stuff too.

i really like bands that incorperate alot od dub into their sound, not like ska or Sublime, though. more in a subtle way, like Fugazi and the Clash's later stuff. "Guns of Brixton" is a great Clash song and "Waiting Room" and "And the Same" are great Fugazi songs that have alot of Reggae influence.

I am a bluesy, classic rock kinda guy. I really like sinking into some Clapton, SRV, or anybody else that really knows how to play guitar. Technical guys like Vai and Satriani are cool but nothing beats the pure emotion of a blues player IMO! Blues is the REAL emo!!! :D

EVH is an incredible guitar player if you can get past his potty mouth!

I also like acoustic rock stuff along the lines of Fleetwood Mac, Jason Mraz, Jewel, Monte Montgomery, and John Mayer. Love the "Real" country stuff as well!

I dislike the headbanging, metalhead, thrash, "Praise the Devil" stuff that has the musical dynamics of a chainsaw. I hate rap and I HATE THESE POP BOYBANDS!!!

That is why I don't listen to the radio. Everything on the mainstream channels is lame. Some of the college stations play cool stuff but that tends to be a couple of hours a week.

The funny thing is that my wife likes oldies, pop/motown and this thing they called the new country which to me seems like old rock. Anyway when we compromise on tunes in the car theres very little overlap because oldies are well before my time and the motown stuff is mixed so you basically hear the voices over the music and she would never understand or appreciate the stuff I listen to. So I usually opt for the country station. At least I can hear the rhythm section. Ah marriage.

To get back to the point don't listen to the radio it will rot your brain or at lthe very least compromise your writing so its...."productized" =/

not all metal worships the devil and not all of it is "chainsaw" tecnique either.

listen to "the Lords Prayer" by Harvey Milk or anything else by that band. they aren't Christians, but if you believe in God, you can almost feel him in that song.

so, Ray S, do you like Ledbelly or John Lee Hooker or Robert Johnson?
