Bands And Albums.

Every sense i was about 11 or 12, iv been listening to Yes. I started out on CLose to the Edge. and just cant stop loving them. Their technicality is superb without losing a shred of musicality and timbre.

what are your thoughts

I've seen Yes in concert 20 times, the first time they opened for Black Sabbath. The show I remember the most was "Tales From a Topographic Ocean" (1974). They came out and performed the entire album, and then did all of "Close to the Edge". Amazing.

I wore out "The Yes Album" and " Fragile" back in the 70's.

I was kinda burned out on them and never got into "Close to the Edge".
Besides, there really was a lot of other great stuff going down at the time,(Alice Cooper; Emerson, Lake And Palmer; Kansas; Boston, Sabbath, Mothers, Trower ect, ect)

Ironically, the other night I was listening to one of my favorite radio stations, and what comes on but a live version of "Heart Of The Sunrise"
I gotta tell y'all, even though it was a somewhat flawed performance, it nearly made the hair on the back of my neck stand up! That music still has the magic.

I was always amazed at the complexity of Yes music. But it never really caught my fancy like some of the simpler streight forward styles.

I've always liked other progressive bands (ELP, early-Genesis, Kansas, Marillion, Dream Theater...), but never really listened to Yes... apart from a greatest hits and Big Generator. Maybe someday I'll get one of their albums/CD's.

"Heart of the Sunrise" is definitely one of my favorite Yes tunes. I liked Yes best when Bruford was the drummer, White kinda sucked. If you're going to buy a Yes album, you can't go wrong with "The Yes Album" (or "Fragile" or "Close to the Edge").

Yeah, boy. This and Stairway To Heaven are going to be my next flute choir endeavors.

It always pissed me off that the bestest bands had the highest ranging singers, back in the day, & I just couldn't cut it doing their material.

Jon Anderson's voice was one of the worst for me to try, & it kinda put me off of them, along with many many other bands.

Their music is always top-notch, though, & I eventually DID buy one of their LP's...what was it...90210? No that's a TV show...but a buncha numbers was the title. I've always appreciated their musical abilities, as long as I've heard them...& these days, with a somewhat more open mind, all I can say is "wow" every time I hear their stuff.

Phil you must go get The Yes Album tomorrow. It is essential.

Yeah trying to cover the high vocalists of yesteryear was tough; now it's tough to cover the growling vocalists of today lol.

I've seen Yes in concert twice. Once with the Wakeman/Howe lineup, and once with Trevor Rabin. I prefer Rabin's work as a guitarist (I don't much like Howe's style), but as one of the godfathers of modern Prog they're just a must-have band in my collection. I always wished Wakeman could have stuck around long enough to do a couple albums with Rabin. I think that would have been the best Yes material ever.

I heard that live version of Sunrise again this evening on WNTI (great local radio station) and it sounded even better!
