I've had 'em as long as I can remember. There have been times that my ears actually bled from them as the pressure built up from within. I've gone to too many doctors to list, & all they ever do is prescribe anitbiotics. I don't bother with them anymore. It just has to go its course, I suppose, & I find myself resigned to the agony once or twice a year.

It's amazing how fast these damned things come on. Last nite, sitting in my recliner, I felt it start. An hour later I was writhing in pain again.

There is little or no relief from heat, from sweet oil, from whatever I do. I've tried a lot of "cures," but it just goes on until it's done. I would guess I lose 4-5 days a year off work from these debilitating attacks. The doctors tell me they can't put those lil tubes in my ears cuz you hafta do that when you're a kid.

I was up until 5 AM. This crap is equal to the worst toothache you ever had. I'm exhausted & frankly fed up with it. When they occur, I'm down for the count until it's over.

Anyone else get this? What do you do when it happens? What causes it in the 1st place, & is there any way to avoid it?

Started happening to me back in 1999, when flying. My job was 25% travel, and out of nowhere, one day it hits me literally the moment we hit 1000 feet in the plane.

Long story short, it happened every time I flew, always ended up with the plane landing and me in my seat in the fetal position.

Saw an ear/throat/nose specialist, and he looked up my nose, told me my sinuses were F*d and I also had a deviated septum, compounding the problem, and surgery was necessary if I planned on ever flying again.

Guess what I'm getting at is that the ears might be only part of the problem, and that the aggrivator might be elsewhere.

Hope it works out, but don't give up on finding a solution, It took 3 neurologists before I found ONE who knew how to identify my daughters autism.

The medical community sucks these days and finding a doctor who knows how to do his job is about the same ratio of finding musicians on craigslist who actually can play their instrument.

No idea, but it got me to browsing around the net.
Try any of these 'cures'?:

Being from west virginy, you might try the moonshine and hot water mix.
Ive never had to deal with earaches. I have an impenetrable wall of wax at all times. :)

Hey Guys,

Im CURRENTLY dealin with a middle/inner ear prob myself.I cant EVER remeber a time that when pressing behind my ear OR lightly swabbing a Q tip didnt bring on pain...I think its just a result of too much sinus drainage. What helps me are several things I can do. #1 , I take the base on my palms and massage the back of my head where the neck and skull meet. When the ears are inflammed, there will be alot of pressure and stiffness there.Try "Milkin" that for 3-5 min pressing downward all the while.THEN "Milk" behind the ears pressing downward in to the neck. OH Crap, do this first...Have your old lady PULL your hair twisting counter/clockwise all over the head. THEN do the other 2 steps. It will be painful for 5-7 min BUT, you will get relief. ALSO, reflexology WORKS guys.Yeah I know, I thought it was a bunch of hocus pocus BS, BUT working the pressure points in your feet DOES WORK. There are many charts on the net showin ya where these are and what they're related to.I have a book I go by. Ive been dizzy for daze with this current bout of ear trouble and have to "relieve" myself 2-3 times a day. But yeah Philby , alotta the honest"cutting edge" doctors will tell ya antibiotics for ear infections are about useless. You'll heal in about the same amount of time if you just do homeopathic remedies.Yeah, the pressure points for the ears in your feet are gonna be SORE so grit your teeth and take the pain.Drink 2 big glass of water when your done to flush those impurities out..HELL YEAH, F *** DOCTORS, the horse they rode in on , AND everybody that looks like them... ..Hell, Im treat myself for Thyroid, Postate, High BP...Ill GLADLY exit this earth" stage left" before I see the inside of a QUAAAWAAACK office again.I hope 1 or a combo of these work for ya.

Thanks, guys. I'm looking at that site right now, Zip. I've tried a lot of these, but I think I'll pass on the "three drops of my own urine." All I can say to that one is "ew." There are pages & pages of info, here, though. Maybe there'll be something.

John - The wife won't get home until late tonight, so I'l try that if I can't get any relief before then.

I'm thinkin' maybe I'll just dig out the old cordless & drill a hole in my head to relieve the pressure. Damn it hurts!

Philby,
Back in the early 50's I used to get bad earaches. My dad used to blow cigarette smoke in my ear to ease my suffering. (come to think of it, it's the only time my mom would let him smoke in the house).

One day, my mom took me to the doctor. Little did I know, I was going to have ear surgery, wide awake, no anesthesia, right there in the doctor's office while sittin in a gawd damn chair!

I recall the ol' doc sayin, "now sit still Johnnie, this is gonna hurt"

He sure nuff wasn't lyin'!

Never had earaches since! (got good pitch too)

If you got an old hookah layin' around from the 60's, maybe you can do my dad's treatment by yourself. Better yet, maybe you should seek out a good surgeon.

Hope you can get some relief, 'cause even though I haven't had an ear ache in over half a century, I do recall that they SUCK.

Maybe listening to a little Loreena Mckennitt may help, (she has a sweet voice) I'll try to find you a link.

Hang in there,'ol buddy,
Howlin'

That sucks Phil. Wish I could take away your pain. But I just know Jesus, I aint him.
I frequently (3-4 times a year) use warm saline and a big assed syring to wash out my ears. This helps prevent ear aches. Also I rarely blow my nose and then very gently. (nose has been broken many times) When you have a head cold your a lot better off sucking the snot back and spitting (gross I know, sorry) it prevents themucus from building up and stagnating in the ear canal.

Day 3 - I remember one time that my ears went all floopy on me, & I kept hearing this "doubling effect" in that every tone I heard had a slightly sharp 5th accompaniment. Had a solo gig to play while I had that going on. It was a real bitch to pull off, but somehow I managed. That one really scared me, cuz it lasted over a week! I know there's some scarring on my eardrums, cuz it's been confirmed by several Dr's over the years.

Cap - thanks for the useful advice. I always know I can count on you to be consistant, if nothing else.

John - the massage stuff seemed to help for awhile, but the inner swelling just keeps coming back. So does the pain.

sans - yeah, I've had my nose broken a few times as a kid. Maybe that's got something to do with it all. I'm sure it's a sinus thing that causes it, but what the hell can be done to fix it?

If this doesn't get better by tomorrow, I just may have to go to that damned doctor. This time, though, I will pin that scrawny lil bastid to the wall & make him answer my Q's about a PERMANENT solution!

lol just go to the damn doctor, Phil. Don't try all those "home remedies" cause they're all personal opinions and nothing else.

Hey Philby, I had this problem when I was a boy and into my twenty's and I know how painful it can be. When blood and drainage comes out that means you have had an inner ear infection and the pressure has built to a point to where it has ruptured your tempanic membrane (eardrum) it is the build up of pressure behind your eardrum that is causing that terrible pain and I haven't felt pain worse than that in my 50 years they put tubes in my ears when I was young 8 and that did not help at all. I guess I outgrew it (knock on wood). I am sorry you have to exsperiance that kind of pain, my advise wood be to go see an Ear Nose and Throat specialist Dr. certainly they have come up with something to help this affliction with todays technologies.

If our traditional medical establishment hasn't helped you I would try two other sources, chiropractic (sometimes they can help what you think they can't) and naturopathic or holistic healing practioners. Before I ever go see any regular doctor I always go to them first. The naturopath I see is Dr. Diehn. Her practice is called Integrative Medical Specialties. She does consultations on the phone and on the internet. If you're interested send me a private message and I'll get you her phone number. She has been a godsend to me and my family.

I had tubes put in my ears when I was a kid (I don't remember it ) but the tetracyclene did some sh*t to my teeth that still hurts. My favorite thing I do these days is pour hydrogen peroxide into my ears (one at a time) before I go to sleep and listen to the fuzzy warm bubbling... its kinda nice.
Gets rid of wax build-up.
