"Made IT" - Well cliche 1st, and impossible 2nd. Nobody ever "Makes It", nobody ever will. I once read that just when you think you've made it-you realize that you havent. There's always more.
I agree that it would be nice to do music only (no 'day-job') and have enough to pay bills and some to put some extra away, but for some unknown reason it never ends there. Imho, you have to stay 'hungry' (not in the food sense).. Just my .02 cents..
PS- I would like to 'make it' one day just to see if immeasurable contentment sets in.. I'm not going to hold my breath or count on it tho..

I have played music with people that have said to me "I'll do anything to make it"
I have played with people that were in it for the chicks, for fame, for money, and because they simply love playing music it is part of my identity I'll never be happy if I don't continue to express myself in a musical way. A lot of these people have told me these things over 20 years ago and the only ones still doing it today are doing it for the love of the music. I have tried to make it in the original music scene and it has cost me my life. I am very content at the age of 50, nice home, bueatiful family great equipment but if I had put the same energy into something that would have yeilded more tangible results life could probably be a little better would I be happier I don't think so. Hindsite is 20 20 or so they say. All I am saying is have a backup plan and be realistic, I have done a lot more musically than some people and maybe not as much as a few people, making it to me is being alive, being happy and comfortable in your own skin, (with who you are) I have played music for a living but when you do that it soon becomes just like the job you have today, jeesh I don't feel like going to work today or I think I'll call in for a mental health day. Anyaway I have chosen to have a little more stability in life than playing music as my main source of income, our band used to play 8 to 10 gigs a month but now we have decided to play 3 to 4 gigs a month and this balance is a lot happier we make that suplimental income plus we actually enjoy playing gigs it is not so much like a job and I still write and record my own music here at home. Life is good!!!!!!

Hey J-haley do you play some of your originals along with the covers? I really enjoy doing both at gigs. We play mainly covers but playing our own material gives me the most satisfaction. I wouldn't have it any other way. May not get as many gigs but I do this mainly for Me and MY enjoyment. Later...
No Bob, I keep the two of them separate, our band is an all cover band but lately we have been talking about doing some original stuff, so in the near future we probably will write some music collaboratively. lately the plan has been to keep the band together we have been thru a lot of personnel changes a lot of musicians coming and going and this can be very distracting, as the leader of the band and having gigs on the books I am trying to keep the guy's in the band focused on learning new material cover songs so we can meet our gig responsibilities, we have decided to stay a 3 piece band which I really did not want to do I just prefer to have keys in the band, but finding someone who wants to do what we want to do is proving to be difficult.
Anyway we are starting to settle in to being a three piece band and things are going smoothly, so we have said we are going to start having writing sessions after the first of the year, at these sessions I will introduce my songs and hopefully include them sometime around March or April.
