I just dont want to underbuild a system, I know the bottom end can suck up enormous amounts of power, I've seen so many live bands that were underpowered, like all you could hear was the lead guitar and snare drum, yuck. For me a bar band without a miked drum kit is just not worth listening to, I want to be frightened by the loudness and so this is the level of bass power I want. Maybe 1000 watts will do it?

Sorry to hear that man. For sure none of us want to do anything on plastic if we can help it. These guys just keep jackin up the rate. Where I work we now charge the %3.25 of purchase price American Express charges us, back to the customers. Sucks but we have no choice.
Better to pay cash.
I need some subwoofers myself, yet I refuse to use the card I purchased my other equipment with.
Keep kicken stillkicken, I feel like it will turn around some after the first of the year.
Best of luck.

I say find yourself a Fender Bassman -- 150w 12inch combo.
Those things rock. Put a mic on it live and you should be fine.
One of my bass players started using his cuz we moved to a different practice location, and it kicks ass. Sounds better than his giant Ampeg rig that he left at home. And I can hear much more clearly even though the ampeg is much more wattage.
