What do you think, does Joe Satriani have a case?

Wow! They sound exactly the same to me.

I don’t listen to much music, for that very reason. Your humming a tune before you know it, "hey that sounds pretty good". Of course it escapes the attention that the very same thing is playing on the TV in the background, while you’re writing that new original wonder.

Being so seriously commercial, I do find it hard to believe it was purely accidental. But when you copyright a song, isn’t that to prevent that very thing from happening? With all the music there has ever been, there HAS to be repeats of the same idea. If you sincerely take every legal requirement, how are you supposed to know what every other song on the planet sounds like? Huey Lewis, I want a new drug and the theme from Ghost Busters was a case I remember from, well a ”little” while ago.

The subconscious part is actually one of my biggest concerns. I mean Sentient, you do a lot of original stuff. Now imagine you do everything required by law and a song you created did really great, yet happens to sound like someone else? Although your stuff is quite unique (and in a good way), those chances are pretty slim. In that post both songs do sound the same. George Harrison (assuming he’s telling the truth, but it sounds very plausible to me), came across the same melody in a different way. Does how similar it sound just increase the level of guilt? If it’s only for or eight notes, what’s to stop someone from copyrighting those patterns alone. Or the entire blues scale, in slightly different combos? Then go searching for victims after?

The intent makes all the difference between outright thief, or misfortunate musician. I’m just stating I would never want to be in those shoes. And if most people are trying for a specific popularly accepted sound, it’s bound to happen on occasion. In this world of red tape and litigation, I guess copyright insurance is going to be just another natural evolution, to complicate commercial music matters further. Not that I am worried about coming up with anything that good anytime soon, but some of you folks should be concerned, thinking copyright is enough protection from the past and future. (depending on which side of the coin you are on).

Oh yeah and He’s So Fine. My Uncle used to listen to oldies a lot. Hey did you get to the part about Allen, doing the stock buy from the plaintiff, after working for George‘s defense? The guy is almost crooked enough to be a politician.

It's called independent reinvention. I would be willing to bet money that coldplay NEVER listened to Joe's song. Should they be liable? Yes. Are they uncool and guilty of copying him intentionally? No way.

Yea, they sound similar, but it happens way too often and I've seen worse rip-offs and no legal actions were taken. So, Satch should suck it up and Coldplay should continue sucking in general.

Someone already did a mashup. Coldplay still sounds like crap with a pinch of shyt. Plus, Satch plays the vocal line, the guitar riff, the bass line and the drum beat with his geetar

Coldplays major label debut is sonic bliss to me. The track "don't panic" is amazing to me. I like the bass and guitar on that album more than any other element, but I love most of that album. I get bored with the satch pretty quick.

Yea, with Satch, it's a miss and hit with the fans. I, personally, won't be able to listen to his instrumentals for more than 2 hours straight, but yea I'm a mini-fan
