Just want to acknowledge the passing of a truly great singer .
Odetta Holmes is not a known by many, but her contribution to American music and history is great. Very few posses such vocal power and passion.

My favorite guitar player ,GE Smith, attributes much of his early inspiration from seeing Odetta perform live when he was young. Dylan does too as well as many others.

I was unaware of this great lady until I heard her duet with Rodger Mcguinn on his CD "Live From The Folk Den."

She was active in the civil rights movement and it was hoped she would sing at the presidential inauguration.

She was a singers singer and a true American folk artist . Its doubtful that any recording could capture her live presence.

She will be missed by many.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aaya8jYZ ... re=related[url]

I'm going to try again but if it goes to the wrong link again just copy and paste it in your browser if you like to hear her version of that song.

The song is on You Tube.

I checked out her rendition of The House of The Rising Sun. It was sooo cool. I was interested in that because I play that in one of the rock bands I hang out with. I would love to do it with piano accompaniment like Odetta did it.

Lalong, the sixteen pretty maiden line is part of the lyrics in the House of the rising sun Odetta's version, the last paragraph was made up by me.

She definitely had a voice, HJ! I've heard her before, but never delved that deep into her stuff. Thanks for the info. Sorry to see her go. Hope she's having a blast on the "B" side.

Two white horses in a line
Two white horses in a line
Two white Horses in a line
carrying me to my burying ground

some need diamonds some need love
some need Cards some need luck
Some need dollar bills lining their clothes
All I need is all I need is

two white horses in a line
two white horses in a line
two white horses in a line
taking me for my farewell ride

(Chorus 2x)
some may say this might be Your last farewell ride

I don't see the face of Kindness
I don't hear the Mission bells
I don't smell The morning roses
all I see Is all I see is

Two white horses in a line
Two white horses in a line
Two white horses in a line
Carrying me to my burying ground

(Chorus 2x)
Some may say this might be Your last farewell ride

I’m 45, you know I’ve had to of heard that song, what maybe a few hundred times in my lifetime? I have a hard time distinguishing lyrics from melodies. Probably why I suck at lyrics so badly. Anyway it’s different just reading them, they seem more dramatic. It’s also the added relevance, since it is her passing we are talking about. It was a nice addition fret.

I didn't hear she passed away... RIP Odetta... She was amazing. There's a good bit of her performing in the Bob Dylan documentary 'No Direction Home'
