For me, the process varies really, but overall, I'd say it flows out of me in inspired moments. I can't ever just say "Hey, I'm going to write a song today" and expect it to turn out like anything worth listening to. During my moments, however, I will sit down for a period of time ranging from minutes to hours until it sounds right. With the exception of the odd line of lyrics, usually the music comes first, and the words after, such that they fit the mood of the song they're accompanying.

And yeah, like Kramerguy, I've had a song in my head for a full day at work, and didn't end up transcribing it until I got off for the day. It actually turned out pretty nicely, too.

Right now, lyrics are a pretty easy thing for my current project, since the project is built around a centralized group of characters. I just have to focus on advancing the story in the best way possible, and the words come together just like that.

Actually, yesterday, we were playing covers n stuff. And all of a sudden, the drummer went "we gotta make up some new shyt" .. we were like "okay" .. and we did! It was weird. No long awkward pauses or really tough blocks while writing the song parts. I think we got a basis for a song. It happens. But we still need the damn bass :P

Our bassest's wife told me he has notebook after notebook filled with lyrics / poems. Enough for several albums. If they are all as emotional as "My Sweet" we,ll be doing music forever!

My sister has a band and she is the lead singer! I also always ask her, how she gets the good lyrics. For me it's unimaginable how to write such touching lyrics!
She told me, that e.g she just walks down the street and she watches the ppl there very closely and so she gets new ideas, and of course when something special happens in her life.
She just writes down her thoughts and that's it!
Sounds easy ;)

Allowingones self to be moved to lyrics by the world around you is not easy. But it does at times come naturally.

Hey, I can make up a dozen country songs just while I'm sitting on the toilet in the morning. Fascinating, isn't it?
