Check out your pawn shops & consignment musical shops, Andrew. I've gotten my best buys from those places.

Kentucky F-style mandolin - $150 w/hard case

Aria Pro II bass - $275

Fender Jazz bass - $250

'74 Fender Mustang - $500 (not so good, but I got it for my son, who no longer plays, the lil bastard!)

Hohner Revelation w/Floyd Rose - $300 (another for my son & a beautiful axe!)

You can get a new Sound Design for around $300 or less, depending on where you buy them (well, you could 4 years ago, anyway. Haven't priced them in a while). I highly recommend the Ibenez necks, esp for new players. Nice & thin & really good action! They make great basses, man.

I've seen a lot of BCRich basses for as low as $200, but damn they look like something you'd see in a 14 yr old's garage band, to me. UGLY!!! They do sound nice & play pretty well, though, I must admit.

In these economic times, I'd wager that if you look hard enough, you can find some very good buys at places like these. I may never buy anything new ever again!

If you want a p-bass do it like we did.

eBay..

Buy the neck alone and then buy the body.

If you are lucky, you'll have a franken p-bass..

I have an ibanez roadstar bass and a fender jazz bass and that franken p-bass puts them both to shame easily and quickly.

Yea, it's been over a month since I've been to the pawn shops here. They have some good stuff, but for the most part, they're abused goods lol
