Hi, I've been in touch with a few bands and need some help making a comparison. I know a mix of bands my voice might closely relate to but I rather have outside opinions as to what band my voice resembles tone and style wise. I know my vocals need work, just need a comparison. I have a cover of Fine Again up just for getting comparisons. Thanks guys

Well, I can't judge by just one lil recording. Its distortion takes away from your vocals.
Having said that... I used to cover that song. Good choice. You sang it okay. A few pitch and control problems, but it was good.

You wanna know where you stand style-wise? Experiment as much as possible. Practise and try to nail blues rock for example.. done with that? Try some old country classics.. etc.
Dont give up too

lol my band just picked that song up. It's really a kickass song - a credit to today's music.

As far as the vocals go, I'd say your tone/style really don't seem to fit it. Hard to say what you will fit with only one song demo'd, but as Andragon mentioned, you do have some pitch control issues, and I'd say keep working on that and more importantly...keep recording!! The best way to evaluate yourself is to record your practices and be your own harshest critic, always looking to improve. I'm guessing you are new(er) to music/vocals?

You need to do two things - relax & tighten up. I know that sounds a bit confusing, so I'll explain.

Relax - when you're recording, ignore/forget the fact that the recording is happening! It's you either all alone expressing yourself in song, or you're on stage & excited & there's a huge crowd cheering you on cuz you're so well received before you even start. Close your eyes & let it flow out of you. Fear of the recorder will kill your performance if you allow it. Trust me. It happens to a lot of ppl, myself included. Get yourself in a different mindset than the "this is for posterity" thing.

Tighten up - use some good headphones. Set your level roughly equal to if not just a touch louder than the ambient music levels so that you can hear & be sure of your pitch & timing. When you find yourself slipping, don't stop, finish the song as perfect as you can. Do NOT let a slip force you into thinking about your mistake, but continue concentrating on the next note, the next line, & make it so good that your imaginary audience will forget that little slip.

Control these two issues that I'd be willing to bet that you have, & your voice will sound better every time you record it. Ppl often tend to put too much pressure on themselves & then wonder "do I really sound like that?" even though you don't, in actuality, when that pressure isn't there. Remove the pressure. Concentrate on your work. Control the situation.

When you're singing something & your voice just isn't hitting those high notes, listen to the chords of the song & quickly choose a lower harmony note. When you perform live, this will get you by on more occasions than you'd think, & ppl will not even notice the change, more often than not.

One last word - try to hit the notes exactly, rather than sliding into them. That may work for the guy who recorded it, but you need to tighten up before altering your style to something along those lines. Once you are very confident in your work in the areas of pitch & timing, then you can experiment with sliding & other techniques that the pro's use.

Good luck.

Cool thanks for all the advice and yeah I put a lot of pressure on myself when I'm recording so that could be one thing.

My in-laws are in Texas, & I like the fact that they are over 1,000 miles away! (Don't tell my wife I said that!)

Don, I hope our responses haven't discouraged you. You should put the recording back up, so that others can help you as well. Neanderpaul is an amazing singer, & will be able to give you tips that I've no doubt forgotten or missed. Same with many others, like Ryan Strain.

We aren't here to blast anyone, ever. If you need help in any musical area, you'll find that there are many (oftentimes too many!) ppl here with opinions & ideas & compliments & criticisms that may help & give you proper direction or just kudos for trying & doing well, if nothing else.

Welcome to the forum.

Well I didn't take it down because of responses, I was taking the advice of comparing recordings etc and seeing what music style fits my voice etc and doesn't make me as sucky, but yeah I'll put it back up. Everyone I've talked to thinks I should be doing country stuff because of my twang.

It's hard for me to give an opinion from that recording, but I can tell you this much. You show the desire, this is most important to all endevors.
And dont do country or anything else because someone said so.
