I agree with both points of view; punk was not only a musical style it was a fashion statement and a period of time. But punk is very much still alive. My band still does punk (Stooges/Ramones/Mudhoney/Zappa mashup) and people still love it! But to answer the question, I'll say the Talking Heads, although I love The Smiths and The Cure.

let's get back to the thread topic guys...

most influential post punk band. Definitely Joy Division... then Public Image Limited.

You gotta look at all the JD clones... it's insane. People are saying Wire... well Wire were moreso a straight up 70's punk band with some pioneering post-punk songs but mostly 70's punk. I don't see as much Wire clones out there as I seen Joy Division clones. Throughout the 80's TONS of AMAZING post punk acts were trying to be JD and New Order.

And PIL started the whole mixing Jazz/funk with Punk... which catapulted a few sub genres... bands like James Chance and the Contortions, DNA... and Teenage Jesus and the Jerks. With the No Wave scene from New York.

An art punk band off of Factory Records with JD, The Fall.

A minimal wave/post punk band off of Factory records. The Durutti Column was playing post punk/minimal synth stuff in the mid-70's. BEFORE PUNK EVEN WAS PUNK they were playing post punk.

But the MOST influential post-punk act was JD... HANDS DOWN. (but many.. MANY bands that deserve to be named but never will get the credit where credit's due... the ungreat... unfortunate fact)

Pearl Jam was/is Grunge gone alternative (late 90s).
Post punk would be, imo, Green Day, Blink 182, etc.
