Hello Everyone! I am back to ask some more help.

Unfortunately, I haven't had much luck finding band members and my first recording session didn't goa s well as I had planned, so I am revisiting some of the advice on the forum again.

I have looked at Mics and have pretty much decided on a Shure SM58 wireless. I just haven't broke down and bought one since I can't seem to convince myself that spending $300 on a microphone that may or may not get used at this point seems a bit rash, since I can't even get someone to talk to me seriously.

At any rate, I have been considering recording software. I did purchase a new laptop and want to put that to use. At my local best buy, circuit city, target, etc I have found similar software. Sony, Acid and American Idol recording software. They all seem to offer the same options. I think the American Idol had an added bonus of Randy production loops... something like that. At any rate, the software was prices from $30- $80, Sony being on the high end. Does any one have suggestions? Is there other online software that I should look at?

Once again, thanks to anyone who takes the time to even read this and thank you even more to anyone who offers a respnse!

Auburn Diva has been a great source of help!! Thank you Auburn.

Can anyone give me an idea of where to look for open mic nights at?!

People have told me oh yeah they are around, but no one can tell me a specific place... I have seen people perform at a local coffee shop, but really no audience, don't think I would get a lot of feedback... HELP!

Unfortunately, getting into recording software is likely going to be a learning curve if you get anything good. If yer lookin to sing over a bunch of premade tracks you are probably looking in the right area with the software you mentioned. If you want to make yer own music, I would suggest checking out some free trials online. For ease of use - for someone who doesn't read music and wants to make jams and isn't concerned with midi - acid. For a much more creative and unique sound - frooty loops. You can find all kinds of free loops on the inet and throw them together in fruity - then throw vocals on top.
Unfortunately you are going to have to learn about soundcards. The one you have may work, but you may want to make that your second investment as your sound will only be as good as your weakest link. Then get a nice pair of akg headphones - spend some money on this. AFA mic, for recording vocals - you want a large diaphram mic. An sm58 will do the job, but anything -even cheaper brands like behringer- in a large diaphram mic will be a night and day difference. Be prepared to hate your voice through an sm57/58. they are designed to be a live mic, and they work for recording guitar or drums, but with vocals they suck monkey doo doo. use your bathroom as a vocal box and you'll do ok.
hope this helps

I went and recorded some new songs. I am very excited!! Just waiting for them to be mixed so I can post them.
Spoke with the gentleman who did the recording about his software. He uses Magix. Said that he downloaded a bunch of different trials and felt that it was the best program. He allowed me to site in watch during the prelims and first couple of sound bouncing. I had no idea what was going on... there were so many options! I did get to see vocals, music, background vocals and we had some clapping in the song. So it was neat to see how all that was separate and then put together.
Does anyone have experience with Magix software?
As far as reading music, I haven't done that since I played clarinet in the 5th grade. So I guess the best thing for me while I am still flying solo is to get the loops and start mixing?!
Once again, if anyone can give me suggestions on where to look for information on open mic nights, I would really appreciate it!

Merci!

Hello,

I'm a vocalist as well. I have several different mics.. none wireless at this time... My favorite mic is a Sure 87a Beta with a presonus Tube Preamp. You will absolutely love the warmth of the sound. the whole set up.. if bought online will run you about $350.00 beans..... Well Well worth it. The SM58 is a time tested... proven workhorse... and will always be a good bang for the buck but if your wanting to be a lead vocalist, you'll want to go the next step up, it will also help your confidence because when you hear how nice your voice sounds.... it'll give you an even greater urge to let it rip.... also.... the warmth of the sound will impress those you are auditioning for.

I have Karaoke cd's that I practice to all the time. Its a great way to keep the pipes in shape, and good way to learn covers...if thats what your shootin for. I'm in an all original band write my own music... (some of which is posted here) and I enjoy singing to the Karaoke stuff.... especially the classic rock.... Its just flat out fun. Its like having a good backing band with out the attitude.

Anyways.... again... the Sure 87A Beta mic... is by far the best bang for the buck... without getting into the 1000 dollar range. Its a condenser mic...very sensitive but its very resistant to feedback.... I use it live all the time and have no problems even with the Presonus tube pre-amp... ya just cant beat it. I absolutely love it and I gets lots of compliments on the clarity of the sound when we play. Also... the young lady from Daytona... being a female vocalist herself.... can steer ya right. Welp... I hope that helps... and also... dont get discouraged. GO FOR IT. I'm 37.... so your never to old. I wish you the best of luck. Peace and safety.

Michael Evans.

Welp...... thats a good question. There are so many options.

I'm not to swift on a computer. I can learn ... but it takes me a while.. I'm more of a touchy feely kinda person... in other words... I like to touch the nobs, sliders, eq all that instead of clicking a mouse. and thats just preference.

Everything I wrote and have posted was done on a Boss BR1200CD. Its a 12 channel multitracker. It has a 60 gig hard drive... hours hours of recording...trust me. It has every in and out imaginable.... optical-usb-audio-digital you name it. You can dumo everything to your computer if you want as a safety net for backing up if you want.... ( and I honestly havent used it yet at its full potential....only at say 50% of what that little son of a gun can do).

Effects...... It has more vocal effects than you'll ever need... in fact... all the effects used in my posted music.... even the guitars... was all produced with the Boss... it has keyboard effects, eq, chorus, flange, delay... and when your all done.. it even has Mastering tools. It also has what called virtual tracks..... that means you can sing a song 20 different ways and save all of them and then later on choose the one you like best...... and the best part.... It costs under a $1000.00. I bought mine for 1200 bucks two years ago.... and they've come down since then...now they go for around 900 or so.... shop around online. Check out Guitar Center, Musicians friend, even Ebay. Just becareful buying used. I generally dont like to buy used unless I know for sure who used and HOW they used it. I had too many bad experiences in the past with used stuff. When its new... you know what you got..including a warranty. Money is too hard to come by to take a chance on something that somebody may have abused. And again, thats just my preference.

If you get a chance... listen to "Dream of You" and "Somedays , So Lonely" on some nice speakers and if you like what you hear, then the Boss may be the route you want to go. If you dont have a nice speaker set up for your computer, let me know and send me an email address and I'll send you the files.

Finally, they do make a smaller version of the BR1200CD... just a few less tracks.. but you'll be supreised at how quickly you can use those tracks up... in fact I wish I had about 6 more tracks to play with.... Welp... hope that helps. Let me now when you get your other site set up, I'd love hear what you've got. I also sent you a message on your myspace page. Sorry... dont mean to chatter so much... I just really get excited about this stuff. And anyone you can send my way would be great and I'm happy to return the favor as well.

Soon I'll be signing up with that Snocap service and should anyone want to buy my stuff they'll be able to. AAAHHHHHH !!!! So much to do....so little time. Wouldn't it be great to do this for an income? If you and your hubby ever come down, look me up. My girlfriend is Sicilian and makes kick ass food. Her pic is on my myspace page... aint she purdy ?? LOL. I think so...... she's a gift from God. In fact... that song "Dream of You" that I have posted I wrote for her.

Peace. Have a great one. Mike
