Man , you shoulda been a politeeeshun.. .So many ways to say "the same thing".The polls thus far I think will reflect the way this board has operated been since 2005.Some are more harsh than others but HONEST .Id rather hear "MAN that last tune was a low middy canniassed soundin mix and the piano was WAY too hot and those vocals... SHEESH , ya think ya got enuff FX going there buddy??? THAN, yeah , man that was "pretty good" or "not bad"..MY ALL TIME FAV critique on here is when
a member responded to a female vocal asking the question "Is that a Cat crying or a Child dying. To that, I DID piss myself.(bad prostate) .Yeah , it'll be interesting to see how these choices are sliced up..

If I reply to a post, it will be with my honest opinion. -- I'll try to be polite about it, contrary to what some of y'all might think.
Some days Id like to just let it fly and be mean, but that normally isn't me, so I just dont comment.

I will say, for this forum... I think theres a bit too much Niceness on feedback requests.
I actually want people to give it to me straight, or hammer me. (If they think the music warrants some hammering.)
I can take it.
But if you happen to strike a nerve, I'll just go back to the drawing board and come back with something better. It helps me out more than undeserved pats on the back.


Of course, if you are giving feedback with out any music of your own posted, then I'll just ignore what you have to say.

I do my best to be honest and forthright as that is what I expect for myself.
It can be difficult for me to critique a song in a genre' I dont like.
Not being a pro. musician I try to focus on any one part of the composition that stands out to me either - or +.
I am much more likley to say when my own stuff comes out sucking as I know my limitations and when I can do better.
I have some stuff archived that when I hear it now I want to call out the ASPCA. Those poor poor cats.

I don't like to comment about Bandmixers' music on this Forum if I have anything to say that could be construed negatively or "constructive criticism." My comments on this Forum have been generally positive whether I've listened to the music for consideration or not. I personally would rather send any negative opinions directly to the person asking for opinions and put nothing but positive comments on here. Just posting your music for us to listen to is a positive step whether its redeeming music or not. I encourage anyone and everyone to explore and push their abilities to higher levels, getting feedback from others is a good way to find out if you're on the right track. The reason why I hope I never put anybody's music down in a public forum is because of a few reasons. Number 1, what I think about anything doesn't mean diddlysquat. Even though I've been playing pro for 27 years doesn't mean I know squat about music. Number 2, if I don't like something, that doesn't mean somebody else would think it's great. How many famous artists do you think suck? How many songs that have made beaucoup bucks do you think suck? There's tons of songs that I think suck but apparently my opinion doesn't mean squat because those songs made a bunch of money for someone (I hope). If I hear some music that really sucks and needs help I'm more prone to send that person a personal message. To everone who posts their music on here I say "Good job, keep them coming." If I post some more music on Bandmix I'm not opposed to anybody critiquing it on this Forum. It'll probably be awesome, but I'm not opposed to any harsh criticism. My two cents...

Tom Petty is a perfect example of what I'm talking about. I happen to really admire Tom Petty. I like his voice, it's totally unique in the world of music. You know immediately who it is when you hear a Petty song. I know people who can't stand him. Who's to say who's really good or not? Sentient, I also happen to like your songs. The lyrics are kick-ass. I believe you don't need to be Tom Jones to sing your material. I've played your material for a few of my musical friends and they got a kick out of your stuff. It's kind of like Mr. Roger's Neighborhood meets Devo meets political commentary. I think you've actually got something with a little refinement that could be marketable. I enjoyed listening to your material and hope you can get more of it out to the world. Thanks...

I'm much less tactful than I ought to be, I guess, but I straightforwardly say what I think more often than not, & I do try to encourage & to help ppl whenever possible. I don't think I've ever told anyone to quit, anyway.

I've hurt some feelings here & elsewhere for being this way, but I honestly believe that I'm being helpful, at least as far as my own personal taste is concerned.

When you ask for an opinion, you're asking for one that's predetermined by a person's own taste, & you need to remember that. If your taste differs, it ain't no biggie, is it?

I don't care for meatloaf. If you have the perfect recipe for meatloaf, & offer it to me, I may taste it, & tell you it's "good, for meatloaf," but add that it's not my preferred dish. I don't think that's particularly rude or insensitive. By the same token I may suggest a spice or an herb that I think would compliment it better.

There may indeed be some universal truths in "good" music, but the way we prioritize & apply them is part of what makes music appreciation so different from person to person.

I can critique a tune in just about any genre, & tell you that I don't like the genre, but still have a valid opinion about a mix, or arrangement, or whatever.

In the final analysis, I figure that if you care what I think, then you should be strong enough to handle my take on it, even if it differs from your own or other ppl's.

Oh, & I think Tom Petty is a good writer, but I find his whiny voice to be as annoying as Bob Dylan's or Neil Young's. See? It's strictly a personal preference, obviously, or these ppl would never have been as popular as they are. It's pretty clear that I am not in the majority on this one, as I am not on so many others.

If anyone is to survive in the music biz they had better learn to take critisism and have very thick skin because it is a very tough buisiness. A freind once told me this analogy "opinions are like a$$holes we all have them and they all stink" LOL

If I like it, I tell you. If I don't, I don't say anything. I am not able to hear what most of you, that play instruments, hear. I hear the overall music. If something pleases my soul, I say so.

Unless something is pointed out, I tend to not hear the bits and pieces that make up the whole. When I see someone pointing out certain aspects of a piece, I go back and listen again and think "Oh, yeah. I hear that now." So I figure this: I am getting a little education out of these boards. I am also making friends and also hearing some GREAT music.

I am NOT a good person to critique anything.

Sure you are Robin! Who better than the public unclutered by that curse of hearing just one or the piece of the whole enchilada. I would gladly submit our music to that fresh ear to get another opinion.

I chose multiple - I basically see it as a combination of #3 and #4.
