I went to the Lagerhouse in Detroit for an awesome display of music last night. They Never Sleep (www.myspace.com/theyneversleep) opened the show; this is Mike Hard (Thrall, Godbullies, The Brainsaw, etc.) and Karen Neal's (Thrall, Queen Bee, The Brainsaw) new band. Now a four piece, the sound is leaner but still loud and rocking. Next on was my favorite band Chapstik (www.myspace.com/chapstik). Leighton (rhymes with Satan) and crew were up to the task; this was one of the best shows I've seen them do. Last on was Easy Action (www.myspace.com/easyaction), more of Detroit rock's royalty. These guys have been compared to the Stooges (but a more modern approach) and were named after an old Alice Cooper record; they proudly wear their Official Detroit Rock badges. Awesome, I'm so glad I live in this city.

Didn't know Detroit had a strong punk scene. I thought it was just hardcore/grindcore/vegetarian progressive power metallic classical.
Ha sounds like fun.

Guess it must be my age, Andrew, cuz when I think of Detroit, I think "Motown."

Sounds like a good time was had by all, JimmyD. Thanks for the info. I'll look some of those bands up. Never heard of any of them.

Not really sure you could neatly categorize these bands with a punk label; vegetarian progressive power metallic classical is just as suitable. There is a certain sound that is Detroit and no it's not Motown, that was forty years ago. It's a rawness combined with power and a DIY attitude. It doesn't always translate well on recordings; seeing a live show makes it crystal clear.

Aw, ya see? Ya lost me with that "vegetarian" label! I think vegetarians are trying to bring about the collapse of the west with their radical left-wing views & unhealthy appetites!

Tongue was firmly in cheek in my description; as someone who lives across the river Mr. Andragon is quite aware of the musical stylings here in Detroit. Not that there's anything wrong with vegetarianism; I tried it for five years but I missed cheeseburgers too much.
