General Music Chat

I went to see Kathy Mattea (entertainer of the year, 2 grammys, etc) tonight at a smaller venue called the Jefferson center here in Roanoke. She sang all her hits. She sang like an angel. Her band was fantastic.

During the intermission I went up and put a DVD with 5 videos and my contact info the floor right by her set list. She picked it up when she came back on and said "now that's an interesting way to pitch your songs" Heheheh... you never know??

Good for you. You did the right thing. Music is an unconventional world and if you want to live in the music world you also have to be unconventional. You saw the door of oportunity and you kicked it down...just like a Neanderthal

Good going - That "direct approach way" of soliciting your music has a much better chance than mailing it to a label or publishing house. Good Luck with your approach to the Artist.

I was told at an LMC/Louisiana Music Conference in New Orleans by an A&R V.P. that if I wanted to send him anything to listen to new, I would have to address my mail to the "attention" of his Secratary, that was his key code to opening any new music mail. because his name could be found in any published book or magazine about the music business- her's of course wouldn't. Anything that came directly to his attention from an address or source he was unfamiliar with went directly into the round file/garbage can.

So your plan of action is much more feasible. Again - G'Luck I hope she uses something you wrote.

Aside from being willing to go up and leave your stuff, which some people won't even do that, I think you addressed, indirectly, the other important step...

Preparation.

You brought the stuff with you. You came prepared!

I remember reading in a book many years ago, that you should not only have CD's and various formats of your stuff to pass out wherever you are, but even think about keeping an MP3 player with you, so maybe you are in an airport, and someone in the industry is there, and they are stuck waiting for a flight like you are... maybe you convince them to listen to one of your songs right now? If they don't like it, you won't bother them anymore. The book suggested, you may not always have that captive an audience with a big wig or celebrity artist, so be prepared in case you get that shot. You never know who you may run into, even out of the street.

I hope it pans out for you. If something you have is right, you have a leg-up. She liked your style of pitching it, which will make her remember you.

BTW she and her band were killer!
