howdy.I am working it out with a six string fretted Viper violin-there is quite a learning curve coming from an acoustic.i am your basic stompbox kinda guy,and most of what i will be up to is pretty clean, but one of the electric sounds i want to come up with is a Mark knopfler strat sound, think dire straits money for nothing.Anyone out there have an idea of something that might crossover from guitar? I do realize there will be much experimenting, but its not like its, like, work ar anything.thanks!

mhfoley - try some of David Gilmour's licks sometime. They'd sound great on your instrument, I think. Try doing the lead on "There's No Way Out Of Here" from his solo stuff.

There was a band in the '70's that used the violin really well - check out "String Driven Thing - Circus" on youtube...it's way cool! Notice the lack of a drummer, yet the tune rocks!

You ever get into any Caravan? That was a jazz fusion band from the '70's that used all sortsa instruments, including the violin.

Are you accomplished enough to do some Jean-Luc Ponty? Man, I used to love his stuff!

There's a lot of spacey stuff that you could do in a hippie jam situation, too.

I always thought that Clapton's guitar solo on the old Skip James tune "I'm So Glad" as featured on the album Fresh Cream had violin like qualities. I bet a good fiddler could do it justice.
