I am so tired of egotistical no-talent guitar players. I just wish I could find someone who is not only talented but reliable, and down to earth.

I have been interviewing guitar players for our band. One right after the other is just so self-centered. They automatically assume that we have no experience or talent just because we want to start a cover band. I have news for all of you musicians out there. Cover bands make money. And some of us don't want to go around playing the trenches and pounding the pavement trying to get people to listen to our originals. We just want to play some good music, gig out, make friends and a little extra cash.

Also, don't assume you know anything about a person or group of people until you have actually taken the time to get to know them.

OMG... I hear you!! but in my case it's singers! Noone understands that you hafta pay your dues no matter how good you are! You first hafta build up a steady fan base and prove it everytime at every venue... the money comes later on... keep in there...don't give up... we're not all egotistical morons!

Keep looking. There are ppl out there who may fill your needs. It's taken me 2 years to find the guy I think I was looking for, but then one day he just fell out of the sky.

Best thing I've found to do is never stop talking about it to everyone. It might annoy them, but sooner or later they'll know or meet someone & introduce you.

Best of luck with your cover band...I hope it rocks the socks off the ones who passed it by, & then they'll get stinky blistered feet dancing to your tunes.

Tell some of your egocentric guitarists who want to play originals to move to Kansas City and I'll tell some of the egocentric guitarists in Kansas City who play nothing but covers to move your way. Later...

I think it's fing fun as hell just to play...The minute it isn't fun anymore, it's time to move on to your old dirt bike, quad or other substitute endorphin maker.

This might sound whimpy but it relates. I don't choose anyone who does not give me that warm fuzzy feeling. Of course, any musician has to be competent. But I will hire a halfassed yet personable musician over a great egocentric musician. I want musician associates that I can have a cuppa coffee with. Yet, there are a lot of good musicians out there without the issues.

My thread isn't about guitarists in general, its just the ones around here who show up acting like they are so badass, bragging about the few gigs they did, how awesome and "in demand" they are , and how they expect us to do things "their way" because they have playing guitar for 6 measely years. But then when they play their tone is horrendous, they can't follow the tempo, they trip over their pedals. It's ridiculous. They are so condescending. They talk to us as though we have no prior music experience or knowledge. I've had it!

As soon as a musician starts acting all condescending & stuff toward me, all I can do is laugh at them - loud & long. If that doesn't get the message across, not only are they clueless about me & my experience, they are too clueless about life in general to even bother talking to, & I tell them so.

I have found in the past that when people brag about how great they are they are not and those that say they"re not so great usually are. I think those that say they are not so great are those that PRACTICE to become better and those that say they are great don"t do anything to better themselves. In general if you feel like you know everything chances are good that you don"t know jack. I tell people that I know less than half of all things, this way I"m always trying to learn the other half. I just hate when guitarists get singled out for this when it happens with every member of bands.

The fine line is hard to define, but I will try-

You have people who are great players and people who think they are great players. The ones who think it, really do know somewhere in the back of their mind that they ain't that good, so their cockyness kicks in to compensate. You will find them to be anywhere from excessive to extreme when discussing their talent.

The players who are truly good, and know it, tend to be less cocky, but are confident and affirming, but don't need to discuss their abilities beyond simple and direct answers. Once you start to hear "bragging", you got a showboater, poser, whatever you want to call them, and you know to just walk away.

I've encountered this with bassists, singers, drummers, and guitarists. The only difference I see is that guitarists are more plentiful, and since they are in less demand overall, tend to take the brunt of the "diva" label.

I've seen so many bands settle for less because they think the right players aren't out there (I'm guilty too), and it's painful to watch.
