Yeah, it's just like my dream of being a Victoria's Secret underwear model. That never got me anywhere either, no matter how many frilly things I tried on or how good I thought I looked in them. Ppl just don't take dreams seriously, so you have to make it a way of life.

Hey sans - playing team sports helps you to learn to work with others toward a common goal, with each individual putting forth a part of the overall effort in a specific capacity. That's an important part of being in a band, don't you think?

I think wrestling would be better for solo artists.

Yea I,ve heard that line about team sports all my life. I just dont see it work that way in practice. I gave 110% of myself, sacraficed my body for the team and all that. All I got out of it was bad knees. The most important thing in my martial arts carrer was my training partners. We worked together to make each one of us earn every new talent the hard way. But the individual always got the benefit. Not some bankers kid who gets all the press and scholarships.
Who gets the most pay in a pro football team? And could he do anything without the linemen in front of him?

Eh...try being a bass player who never gets leads. Not much glory there, either, but I won't complain as long as I get to see the lil cuties' butts a-boppin' to my beats.

Philby, a good bassist inherently makes a good guitarist better and makes a bad guitarist look like a fool.

If you can groove = people know it.

The only problem is band members get upset. They'll say "you overplay" or "you are supposed to be filling."

If the crowd likes it, that's all the encouragement you need.

And I'd quit smoking, but never music. Not unless I lost some fingers and a big slice of my head. If I couldn't hear my own style of music in my own brain, I wouldn't even consider playing any further.

Regular music is boring.

Our Bassist is the best (maybe the only) musician in our band.
Eric ROCKS, and makes the whole thing thick as a brick.

Don't despair. Live your life. Enjoy this time with your children. The music is part of you and it ain't going anywhere. I've been where you're at, and now I'm pushin' 60 and out playing with one of my sons.
Remember that old Incredible String Band lyric..... "Music...is so much less..Then what you are." :)

George,
I agree with you up to a point about children's teem sports. All three of my boys wrestled and played soccer, and all are now into music, so it appears that they turned out all right.

Black 57,
Just curious. Are you familiar with "Flute Thing" by The Blues Project? That tune is one of my favorite 60's era instrumentals. I would like to hear you play it LIVE :D (as opposed to at your funeral  ).

later,
Howlin'

No, I haven't heard it...I will try and find a recording of it or maybe something on YouTube. Believe me, I would much prfer playing it live  I would be great if you could hear me play it. Here is something that I will begin working on soon.

I gave it up 20 years ago...due to my 1st wife's constant nagging about getting a "real" job! Picked it up again last year and am having the time of my life gigging out in the local clubs and making new friends... I have serious regrets about giving it up for someone elses selfish reasons and I plan to make up for it tenfold!

Ah, Mary, I love that guy so much that I named my son "Ian!"

I could never play the flute...how can ya see your hands when you're starting out? Plus, I got these REALLY big lips that just get in the way of everything.

Ugh, the best soloist I have ever seen, between a bass player and guitar player, was a bass player that kicked A-S-S. He played in a jazz fusion band, called Network, that just allowed the man to go to the moon. If you are a good bassist, you deserve to be in a band that allows you to express that, every now an again. 8) and get the cuties away from the lead guitarist.

I have seen many men having to sacrifice their dreams in this world to please their significant others. Gorl's all I can say, as a woman, get a job and help them to live this dream. I know it is scary, wonderin' where the money will come from when it's time to pay bills. But, a musician is the most important person on the planet, that is why they seem so insignificant. Bach died insignificant, yet, everyone knows who he is 400 years after his death. He was so insignificant that he had 20 kids where they all shared his name and some shared his profession. Bach was so insignificant that his music has been molded to fit every musical ideal. I have to appreciate my life as a woman because my husband doesn't mind supporting my dream. Yes, I do work but if I had to rely on myself as my sole support, I doubt that I would be composing and playing in both a rock band and a jazz band. I wouldn't have a flute choir. I am on step away from being homeless, but I must do this...I absolutely must.
