I found out that it's usually faster to write a good song - than it is to find one on the radio or TV . . .

I've said it before and will repeat. The best mix of music I hear anymore comes from YA,LL!

The radio stations in my area are awesome! A lot of them give local bands props and a few of them set aside some airtime for "Homegrown" artists! They are also very adamant on promoting live acts in the local clubs and frequently announce the dates and places where they are playing!

We have a radio station here in KC that plays some of the local bands. I"ve gotten some airplay on it. It is a "listener supported" radio station that theoretically survives on donations (I"m playing a radio benefit show 10/25). It continually amazes me how lame the commercial stations are. Same tunes over and over and over again. I would thnik that even on a commercial station they would have a few hours a week set aside to play local talent. Somehow or other they should get wise and figure out the money making possibilities of local promotion. The local venues need the publicity, the local bands need the publicity, the radio stations would develop a new, more appreciative audience. They all have their money-making formulas and they"re full of crap. Even the "listener supported" radio station has a money-making agenda. I really don't want to get into it here but all I can say is that money is the key to running anything. If there's a positive cash flow they don't want to change anything. Too risky I guess. what ever happened to the days when you turned on the radio, and you didn't hear two similar songs all day? now it's so same ole same ole. waa waa waa I cut my wrist. or I woke up this mornin in the blues. or she's a country cutie and I'm a real down home man. I'm a real gangsta thug with the most money and hottest ho's blah blah blah. the metal is all the same ole shitt too! it seems like the only genre that has anything original is Pop. yeah I said it (Pop is now the most artful genre)
and the retards in the record industry are probably wondering just how indie is taking over? Grunge seemed to be our last blast at originality and now it has gone by the wayside as well.

Hayden last night I went to an Indie event called Goner Fest in Memphis at the HighTone. It was a real eye opener for me. If you want good oldschool challenging music, throw away the protools and do it like we used too. Track everything live. One take and move on then things get interesting. The other alternative it to turn off the radio and got out and experience live music. Monday night I checked out some blues guys playing for tips on Beale Street and then last night the Indie thing, then Sat night my band Aint Yo Mama plays a big ole honkytonk in Covington TN. If you are a true musician get off the couch, turn off the radio and make something happen. I see so many folks on here and if you track all their post they never leave the house. Playing music is all about live interaction, the computor internet age has sucked a lot of life out of the music scene. BUt if your willing to get out and look its still out there.

On the other hand, you may have a point. It sounds like they actually have some sort of conscience regarding their listeners & their community. Wish these idjits in my area would do that. I wouldn't care what genre they did it for, either, even if it was the local rap guys. I'd just like to see them doing SOMETHING for the locals besides trying to sell us all stuff.

I agree that the radio stations today have pretty lame playlists. What would your ideal playlist contain?

BandMix members exclusively...well..maybe some Floyd & some Zappa...

way out in the upstate of ny the radio isn't atrocious....I have two non clear channel stations to choose from wgfr a college station plays rap into bluegrass into grunge into jazz.....you get the idea....and then theres the ancient independent radio station weqx out of vermont but they play most of that lame droney indie music that I despise...that counts as hope though I s'pose

well JW if I were in Memphis instead of Hazard Ky, I'd probably do a lot more o that! in fact I've seen just about every band around here and several not. ie; Tommy Emannuel was was a road trip. if there's live music around (and it's not a band doing the same 40 song played in bars for 40 years) then I'm there bro.

I have a CD of Johns he sent me when my band and I were just starting off. I dont know how many songs he has written. But as for me he has my respect as a musician.

In my opinion the 70's not only was the last great era to be kid, but for radio as well. Satellite radio hopefully is the wave of the future. I love it m'self!
