what ever happened to the days when you turned on the radio, and you didn't hear two similar songs all day? now it's so same ole same ole. waa waa waa I cut my wrist. or I woke up this mornin in the blues. or she's a country cutie and I'm a real down home man. I'm a real gangsta thug with the most money and hottest ho's blah blah blah. the metal is all the same ole shitt too! it seems like the only genre that has anything original is Pop. yeah I said it (Pop is now the most artful genre)
and the retards in the record industry are probably wondering just how indie is taking over? Grunge seemed to be our last blast at originality and now it has gone by the wayside as well.

Well I never hear music on the radio anymore, just commercials, so I don't listen to it anymore. My mp3 player is all I need.

We have a few good radio stations around here that play a good variety of both good and old stuff. My favourite new singer songwriter is Jeska Hoop. She is currently on tour with Mark Knopfler. There actually is a lot of good new music out there so keep you ears open and check out You tube videos and you are bound to find something that appeals to you.

I've been griping about this for many years. There's a 100 mile radius around our nation's capital the is a "radio wasteland." I know because I live there. Modern R & B, modern "pop", country, rap, classic rock & talk are all you'll receieve in this zone. In fact, I was beginning to think that rock as a musical form had indeed died until I travelled a bit a few years ago. It was either that or it had just become too offensive to be able to play on the free airwaves.

Thanks to the programmers, who live in entirely other parts of the counrty but somehow have their fingers on the pulse of this area & know whet we want, kids growing up today are liable to think the only song Hendrix ever did was All Along The Watchtower, Beatles - Lady Madonna, Stones - Beast Of Burden, etc. And no new rock - EVER - unless it's emo. There are radio stations around here (& everywhere I guess) that play emo exclusively, & brag about it. My wife listens to it, & after 2 songs I want to wreck her car into the nearest pedestrian just to let out all my "feelings." It's no surprize we have so much road rage, today.

What can be done? Pool your money, buy a station out, & program your own while getting the necessary ads to pay for it. I often wonder why no one has done this, but then I look at my own finances & just laugh through the tears.

Did you just notice how the world works?Everything you don't want is jammed into your skull till you like/buy it....and Everything you want, you have to find it for yourself. There's something out there for everybody...and the world isn't as musically contrived as walking cliches make it out to be.

lol I know I'm a dinosoar. good responses and advise. I dont listen to music very often (it's intentional) but when I do I do always have to look in alternative sources like you tube. to be honest sat radio sucks too in my opinion. either it's the same old sh*t I got tired of hearing 10 years ago, or some lil f**k whining n screaming at me! I know a lot of my songs are dark and broody to but I consider them to be the blues, not "I'll cut my wrist if you don't love me"....
most of the good music I find is on the band sites I hit and you tube. I've found little on myspace (actually only 8-10 bands and as many soloist).
it seems like the only inspirations nowadays are I'm mad/tough/rich/cooler than you. oh yeah and I'll kill myself if you dont love me...PLEASE DO!

I wonder if WalMart went & bought out all the stations around here, cuz all I ever hear is what they play in their store (well, except for Lady Madonna, cuz there's a breast reference!).

Hayden i gotta agree with you about typical whinny bitch tunes, but being pissed and tough make for good inspiration...and they are key ingredients for people's lives that don't live in suburban clouds or seclusion. And in my opinion if any type of music is inspiring younger generations to pick up an instrument,it's alright with me.Better then kids wanting to grow up and dance on stage like a marketing tool strapped with a fake mic and pre recorded song that someone else wrote.

clear channel owns every major FM station in the market around here. It's the same old canned classic rock on two stations, same old heavy rock/90's on two stations, and same old pop/hip hop on another 5 stations. Two of the 'light' rock stations actually beam the exact same signal.

The days of DJ's who play what they want, and listener requests are over. They don't care what you want to hear. They care about what sells.

Unfortunately the masses can't go a single day without hearing Hotel California, Sweet Home Alabama, and TNT. Add 300 more songs you never want to hear again and you got yourself a clearchannel format.

Satellite radio is changing that, to a point. There's certainly more variety and they separate everything down to sub-genres which is nice. Still hear a lot of the same old same old though.

I think the underground scene is booming again though, there's a lot of great music out there that can't get enough representation to become mainstream. Part of the collapsed industry we all know and hate. Now you gotta go find it yourself, and filter through a lot of crap to find the good stuff, but it is out there.

We have two classic rock stations in Kansas City. One of them recently switched their fomat slightly. Anyway one day I was listening and they were playing Hotel California which I"ve heard probably 752 times so I switched to the other station, and they were playing THE EXACT SAME SONG. Not only were they playing the exact same song, it was practically in the same exact part of the song (I switched back and forth between stations). Don"t get me wrong, I like the song as well as a lot of classic rock. I guess that the classic rock stations are still making money. I listen to contemporary radio stations, country, etc. I agree that the majority of the new songs have lyrics which are vapid. What appeals to the masses anymore doesn"t appeal to us experienced musicians. Or maybe we"re all getting tired of hearing the same old subject matter being put into the tunes. One of the local radio stations that I"ve been listening to lately is a Christian station that plays old-time Christian favorites and some of the current Christian tunes. There's virtually no commercials on there. Not that I"m Christian, but I find that stuff very interesting to listen to, probably because I haven"t been exposed to much of it before. I also listen to the cable music stations quite a bit. I really enjoy the meditative station (Zen). It"s something new and interesting to me. Later...

Why do you think we want to play out? answer: To hear something YOU find interesting.

Certainly not for money or fame..

To have a good time and to avoid all the sh*t on the radio.

I thought all musicians were anti-radio.

Steve I agree whole heartedly! theres a lotta aingst in some o my songs too.
yes clear channel did the ole wallmart thing to us all; take out the competition and just give em the basic crappy low quality sh*t we can make a steady slow buck on!
I grew up on awesome radio and it cemented me into making music!
