HowlinJ wrote:I got hooked on The Fixx after I got in a cover band in the 80's and had to learn to play and sing "One Thing Leads To Another". I've got agree on The Fixx, one of my favorite bands. I've seen them at least ten times and they are always great! I love Cy, and Jamie is way underrated as a guitarist. But Robin Trower would be a close second; many people dissed him but he has his own style, is a great guitarist and producer and can write excellent music and lyrics.

as far as guitar, sammy hagar...i remember when him and neil schon got together and were doing an interveiw. schon was laughing about sammy's prowess.....i know his solos were pretty short and simple but to me, they got the message across just fine. some guys rip up the board until it smokes but then yer like, "ok, but what is it your trying to say though?"

Yeah, Philby, it's...kid rock. And I have to say, although I've never thought much of him, I do have new respect for him now. Not for the fact that he's basically built his career off of other folks' work (IMO), but in this case he did right by those same folks. As far as royalties go, he really only had to give the other songwriters 50%. Instead, he made sure that everyone involved in writing those songs receive an equal share, including his own share. That was a damn right decent thing to do...I still think he should write his own stuff, but at least he is giving credit where credit is due.

It's funny that Crip mentioned Tiny Tim. All joking aside Tiny Tim was one of the most knowledgable music historians who over lived. His own musicianship was certainly suspect. (Crip plays a bunch of Tiny Tim covers, just not in public.) Could you imagine a heavy metal version of Tiptoe Through The Tulips? Now THAT would be funny. :D :D

Indeed a very talentedindividual. Pick up a copy of Dan Fogelbergs
LIVE: Greetings form the west. Try that lead. The CD is live, however he did all the guitar on the TOUR CD. The wild places.

Well it should be me. Nobody appreciates me sniff-sniff. It's hard to classify Roy Clark as a Rocker but he is my favorite guitarist of all time. On that note, I'll say Ted Nugent.

Van Wilks

John Hiatt

Van is an awesome guitar player from Austin, TX, I've been a huge fan for years. Met him a number of times there and San Antonio, one of my very favorite guitar players. I'm still wishing I could find a copy of his duet with Eric Johnson doing a christmas song. www.vanwilks.com is worth a look if you're not familiar with Van's work, great rock and blues guitar. If you're into guitar players like Billy Gibbons, Sammy Hagar, Robin Trower check out Van Wilks, he toured with ZZ Top years ago and can stay onstage with Eric Johnson, I've seen that with my own two eyes. Not as fast as Eric but every bit as tasteful and gets sounds out of a strat from really nice cleans to Gibbons style nasty on a strat or Les Paul, and some awesome slide work too.

John Hiatt has been a songwriter since the 60's, wrote Jeff Healey's hit "Confidence Man", the Eric Clapton/BB King effort "Riding With the King", Bonnie Raitt's "My Little Runaway" (I think that's the one) and a horde of others. He has also recorded several albums, "Perfectly Good Guitar" is my favorite, the title track is worth the purchase price and it has several other killer tunes too. Perfectly Good guitar is about those guys who smash up their equipment. "It breaks my heart to see those stars; Smashing a perfectly good guitar"...and so on. I can't remember the guitar player's name, but a killer guitar player on that album, great really raunchy sound and some great licks. derfinitely worth a listen. One of the best songwriters around.

LOVED the Fixx!!

yeah I saw em with The Who in Lexington way back and didn't know who they were....till they played 10 songs I had already heard n didn't know it was them!

"Budgie" would be my pick....they were one helluva band back in the 70's (yeah thats right the 70's) when Zepp/The Who/ Sabbath were all big. they were huge in Europe and big on the west coast for a year or two, but then nadda....Metallicca covered "Breadfan"

Well, if we're talking history, I'd hafta say Nektar. They had a harder edge than Floyd, yet reminded me of them. They had a lot of energy for an art rock band, & I loved their material & musicianship. Good '70's band, that. Check out "Remember the Future" or "A Tab In The Ocean."
