Personally, I lack the vocal ability to entertain people.
I love being solo. I've accomplished much in the last year, and I attribute it all to being unfettered. When you're solo you can do whatever you want, whenever you want, and you don't have to run it by anybody. No conflicting schedules. No power struggles. No one else to blame.
Hey Rick,
I do a solo gig BUT, I GOTTA have my ole trusty SQ1 (16trk SEQ)...If ya listen to "Let her Go" on my page , thats what I sound like live.(well without the harmony..
)..I played 4hrs a nite , 3-4 days a week for 3 yrs in Chicago..Had an agent and everything...Had about 150 tunes worked up with drums, Piano, Bass, B3 , Sax, Synth etc..Back in the late 80's people couldnt understand where all that music was comin from..
..SO, I started making a point to TELL people this music was created by ME dammmmit, NOT kareoke...Yeah , you ought to look in to those looping FX boxes..Their demoed all over youtube..(chicks doing black horse and cherry tree).I havent been keepin up with that stuff , I still use this ole workstation, its NEVER failed me like SOME newer piece equipment I know ARRRRRG...

The whole solo concept was so contrary to my personality, that I shouldn't have thought it possible eighteen months ago. But something happened that changed all that. I found myself faced with a situation I couldn't handle, but was given no choice. I was forced to deal with it, and in doing so discovered that my perception of myself was inaccurate. And I thought, what else don't I know about myself? So I just started following through on my own ideas and behaving more in accord with my nature. I'm convinced there's no other way to live. That philosophy, applied to my interest in music, persuaded me to go solo.
I play with myself frequently, but not usually musically!
(come on, you knew it was coming).
Rick, I applaud your solo ability. My personal approach to music really doesn't afford me that option. Part of my passion comes from arranging and texturing. I've done a few solo shows, but I really feel that my music loses something when unaccompanied. Believe me, I am envious of that freedom you enjoy, but it's something I have to deal with. I'm a BAND guy, like it or not.

I've done solo gigs since about '73. Love it. I've played far far more solo than with a band, but when I picked up the bass about 12 years ago, suddenly I started getting to play with lots of other ppl, & I like that a bunch, too.
I still do solos occasionally, but it's pretty rare these days. I think I only played about 10 of them last year.

Are any active members of this forum currently 1) performing for the public as a solo act, and 2) not a member of a band?

Me.
I do all originals, and some of the stuff is apparently difficult to play.
I didn't realize how hard it was to play until I started trying out guitarists and bassists . . .
Crap . . .
.
I never planned on being solo, but my choices were:
> write music that was more rudimentary, so that others can easily play it, or
> play what I like to play, and go solo.
.
Once I decided to go it alone, one problem that cropped up was this:
Most of my songs have a bass line running in and out of the song, and with some of the songs, I consider the bass to be almost 1/2 of the song.
.
To go solo meant dropping 20 - 25 songs.
That left me with about 2 hours of material. (Got over 50 copyrighted originals)
I might eventually go the digital accompiament route . . . I never cared for it, though . . .
