Having an international songwriting competition is a lofty idea, but even with $150,000 in total prizes (spread out to 60+ winners), I don't see how the sponsors can't cover that, it should be chump change to them, so why are they charging an entry fee? Feels like a "pay to play" scenario to me.

If it seems too good to be true, then it probably is...

no it's for probably for real...the John Lennon songwriting contest has a fee of $30 for the first entry and $20 each after the first. can you imagine how many pieces of crap would get entered and have to be listened to if it were free?

Oh I'm certain it's 'real', I guess my problem with it is the prize vs. the entry fee. This is an international competition. There are sure to be thousands of entries. It seems like $150k spread out across 60+ "winners" seems a bit ... cheap, I'm figuring they will probably end up making a killing off the entry fees, easily covering the overhead, as I'm pretty sure all those rockstar judges are doing it for fun, not compensation. They aren't adviertising except on free and internet, and with all the sponsors.. I just don't get how this is not a sleazy operation.

Realistically, to win a top prize of a world-wide music contest that has a hefty entry fee (I think it goes up to $75 if you didn't get in early), should be like a cool $million, or guaranteed 3-record deal with a major label.. something besides 1/64th of $150k...

Just my .02, but feels like a pay-to-play to me with no guarantee of any exposure.

I've entered a few of those, & never got any word back, so I don't do it anymore.

well of course they're doing it for the money....doesn't everyone in the music business do it for "business" reasons? even the artist hope to get paid eventually! yeah you'll have to have a "one in a million" song to win it, but thats the one that deserves it....now how will I spend that money...hmmmm.................................

Sounds like a hoax and no I wouldn't pay to enter ANY contest.
