AHA! I found it! Musician's Friend catalog page 142. It was with the mixers; not the recording equipment. Alesis MultiMix 8USB for $149.99. 8 Channels (4 XLR), basically an 8-channel mixer with a USB port. Built-in effects, 2 aux sends, etc. It comes with Cubase LE. Is this a good deal?

I'm not very impressed by the alesis and it's discontinued...I think for 50 dollars more you're better off with this http://www.audiomidi.com/0404-USB-Digit ... P8628.aspx fwiw the extra software might just be worth more than 50 bux...but please get the opinion of others too...and just so you know, that link goes to audiomidi.com fantastic site with rock bottom prices and awesome service :)

Thanks, Hink. That definitely looks like it's worth the extra $50. I have to check my system, though. I see that the 0404 requires 256MB of RAM, & I may only have 128 (which may be my problem with the Fast Track).

okay I was goin to say it was a bad Idea until I saw the E-mu's classed microphone pre-amp. And the fact that the interface still pulls the same 24/192 khz as my onboard 0404. I'd say that it is probably the best thing on a budget. I still recommend getting a good mixer simply because she was wanting to eventually record live w/ musicians. Go with Hink on this find Auburn ;)

Okay, here's a question: can I use my Yamaha head in conjunction with this unit? Can I plug my mic into my head, then use the out from the head into the unit? That way I can eq the mic & get a little more control. If I can do this, should I bypass the amp & use the passive out, or send the amplified signal?

yes, its possible but you are goin to want to leave everything flat simply because w/ recording programs you can add and lower and control gain, bass, treble, effects and more...there is no reason to EQ a mic simply b/c it is better to work with the original signal. Anyways I am not sure but does this interface have a DI active/passive control built in HINK? If it doesn't should she buy the Box for it?

I gave (threw) the Fast Track back to the BF yesterday. One by one it got into my program files & corrupted them. I finally gave up & uninstalled it when it got to the printer. It started making the error "doink" & saying the computer was unable to communicate with the printer. I uninstalled everything & did a system restore, but my system still isn't back to normal. I hope I didn't hurt my computer by installing that thing!

Well it sounds like you need to throw a lot more memory in that thing...most stuff like that at least requires 512 mb some more then a gig!

I looked at my specs, & I do have 512MB RAM. I knew I cheaped out on some things, but I'd forgotten which things. Lol! I tried to get the best I could afford on what I couldn't easily upgrade, & cheap out on stuff I knew I'd be replacing or upgrading. My virus protection has upgraded itself, so that's a relief. It still won't remember my hotmail password, though.
Alex has been playing with the Session program on his computer & learned how to do a few more things with it, so we're going to re-do some of the songs I did. Unfortunately, I deleted all the files associated with Session, so I'll have to re-record the vocal tracks, but I'd have wanted to do that anyway. Hopefully we'll also be recording some originals soon.
