You guys are going to be sooo sick of me soon.

Latest question:
When someone is in a Classic rock, Southern rock band and they are looking for a singer....are they looking for a male singer? Trust me..there is not much out there as far as Classic rock and Southern rock for female singers. I can and do some stuff that is solely male songs lyric-wise. So do I even bother responding? Know that I am doing the searching on this site. Just to be clear, they are not coming to me. I am looking at them. I know most of you that are posting the most are doing the Classic Rock stuff. So that is why I value your opinions. 8)

Hey Girl,

Yeah , its sign of the times Im afraid..Female vocals for classic rock/SR when it wasnt so "Classic" were very much in demand and and could always count on working..We NEEDED you guys for the vocal range that few guys could operate in. (Im mean really? Now... who's gonna sing jim dandy. :P ? Lady?, Carry on wayward son?.Find your way back? More than a feeling?etc.)...Being honest, for whats out there NOW, Id have to say that around here anyway, most classic rock bands prolly are lookin for guys cuase their most likely gonna be 45 + ,married, and just wantin to have fun with it and have a male bonding experience also. And like you said, alot of the female artists of the day have not re-invented themselves to last in to this century...We have ZERO females around here now doing the classics.Theyr'e either doing country or alt. /punk/emo...Yeah , I havent worked with a good female since 95..Im sure something is out there for ya though, just gonna have to really hit every possible networking outlet, venue etc..Dont think that any from of networking is a waist..Even a small local ad bulletin paper for what you lookin for may prove successful...Most of my buddies from 30 yrs ago are playin the animal clubs and local fests and word of mouth and local networking still gets ya hired around here..Hey its not gonna hurt to respond to these ads..Be tough and dont let guys being guys bother ya. ..Yeah , its always been excepted in my travels for females to do male tunes..Never seen any bias there...Yeah , also ya might have to look at the gen before US for this also ..Guys that are 58 +...They were the season Cats of the 70's...Hope something breaks for ya soon..If you were here , we'd be workin tonite..I have MANY female tunes sequenced that Im sure you'd prolly know.. ..I have the opposite prob..NO comitted females.. :P

When my band was looking, we were open to either sex as a singer. Our attitude was that no matter who we got, we would have to alter the playlist to accommodate the vocal range and style of the singer anyways. Having a female is a big win IMO, females can sing a lot of songs originated with male vocalists, and still sing pat benetar and heart and fleetwood mac and stuff, but you ever see a guy singing "barracuda" or "hit me with your best shot" ?? LOL. That would have to be one very comfortable male singer to pull that stuff off!

I didn't say I was acting like a guy. I said I sang a song that had lyrics written for a male singer. Such as "Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress". A male singers song for sure, but I KICK ASS singing it. :P

I'm sure you do and it's an ok tune...but either way, you're poked. You can't sing aboiut a long cool guy in a black dress. But if you sing about you looking for a long cool woman, then that really isn't any different than a guy in a dress conceptually. My head hurts.

I would love to have a gutsy Female singer in our band. As the lead or in a backup roll. But we dont do classic rock so I guess that opinion dont count for much.
I personally dont see sexism, no matter the lyrics content. A good vox is a good vox. And thats that.

Robin, here in CT there are almost no available female singers, for any style of music.
.
There are no 'female singer looking ads,' and there are always 'female singer wanted' ads every day.
.
If you're a good female vocalist, sing rock (or anything ) and live in CT - you're sitting pretty.[/i]

For me when a female singer sings high male parts it usually lacks in a specific way. it's like the guy singing that high has to work at it and when that happens that 'edge" is approached. nearing breaking up. it's that intensity that makes it sound so good. When a lady sings the same part it usually doesn't have that edge. There are exceptions. And there are great intense lead female vocalists. Heart, Janice, Gretchen Wilson etc etc.

Back in the day (read: 80's) female vocalists were the the thing to have if you were doing a cover band. Today not so much. But good vocalists, male or female, can sing anything, regardless of who it was intended to be sung by. I do a cover of The Pretender's "Back on the Chain Gang" that is pretty cool. No one ever said "that's a chick song".

I think Bruce Willis started a gender bender when he did 'Retha's RESPECT and I take it like OK whatever gender you are, you should have at least one song by the other gender and do a bang up job of it. My personal best is White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane/ Grace Slick. In other words, you go girl!!!

There are countless gender neutral tunes spanning the decades, if you are versatile and sound good in high register along with stamina at high range, bands would hire you in no time.

Your predicament is not dissimilar from guys, I.E. finding the right people, personally I think a good female singer in a band is an asset I’ve seen clubs hiring bands featuring female front person over bands with male front man.

Metal is the only genre of music as far as I know that has not integrated female singers, any other genre including rap features females that give you a wide range of material to choose from.

Again it comes down to finding the right bunch of people who are capable to capitalize your qualities.
