I have been looking at wireless and I have gotten several different recommendations. What would be the best brand to start with? I have looked at Shure, my local music store stocks audio technica and AKG I believe it was. He said that was what everyone wants. Can I get feedback from anyone who has used one or more of these wireless systems?

Per your suggestions, I also was able to get my voice recorded and posted it on my page. Any feedback and constructive criticism is eagerly encouraged and welcomed!!! Thanks again to everyone, I feel like this community has helped me take the appropriate steps in the right direction!! Thanks again!!!

okay I found a rack wireless mic setup buy Vocopro which is mainly used for Karoake but a vocal mic is a vocal mic and per all the reviews it holds as well as the SHURE brands for twice as much...but dont go spreadin it. PLus they sell rack effects and anti distortion for it ;)

There's a reason Vocopro is mainly used for karaoke.

Sassy,

I use the Shure SM58 wireless and swear by it. For me it was an economical way to get a good mic and enjoy freedom of movement...no more tangled cables. And I've dropped the thing a number of times, bent the mesh, but it still sounds great.

I use VHF and have had (touch wood) absolutely no problems with it so far, but I agree with Auburn, go for UHF if you can...switchable frequencies will avoid possible interference with others in your band that may be using VHF wireless. Incidentally, I'm looking at the beta 58 for my next mic.

And last, I've used AKG and Shure PG58 as backing mics in a band, but never up front. But that's just my experience/preference and others may contend otherwise.

Hope that helps!

I have used Shure Mics...Peavy...Samson....even all in one concert last month "Too Short" all had their short-commings. I recommend using your ears. Some mics boast long battery life others shorter. I took a look at Vocopro at musicians friend and demo'd later and they seem to be as good as the stuff we were using on stage. Audio technica is the cheaper route but it's probably not goin to have rack mounting capabilities...The most I have seen it have is 8 channels. If you want a single mic or a couple there is a vocopro setup for rack mount that goes on 100 frequencies. SUPERB!!!! Effect chains with all the echo reverb and etc. VHF and UHF it's all there. But ultimately it's your voice and your decision. If it's something you really want to do go with the expensive industry standard. I just recommend you get something rackmountable and some antifeedback gear. SO you can plug into a mixer/eq for shows. Instead of carrying boxes and such around. Look professional at band try-outs and on-stage. But ultimately do your shopping and homework so you feel good about it b/c its your money ;)

Even the karaoke people shy away from Vocopro. It's got a reputation for being what the new karaoke hosts buy before they know any better. I haven't demo'ed any of their microphones, but I've found their other electronics to be cheaply made & not professional grade. For home use they may be fine, but certainly not high enough quality to withstand the torture that a working band subjects their equipment to.
I noticed some great deals in this Musician's Friend catalog. There's a Sennheiser freePORT that I'd definitely look at. I've been using Nady wired mics lately. They're SM58 knockoffs that came with my PA. So far I've been unable to tell any difference between them & a real 58, & they list for half of what a Shure does. You might check out the Nady wireless that's on sale ($79) as well. There are rack inserts you can buy to mount any mic receiver if rackmounting is a must for you.

Sweet, so there are a multitude of options out there and it was completely narrowed down for me... Well maybe not. Do you think I would be out of line to ask to demo the units in the store?

ask away! If they want to sell it they will let you demo it.

Sam Ash Music usually has most of their mics hooked up & ready to demo on their main PA. Mics are like guitars in one respect; they all feel & sound different, so it's important to test-drive them. If the store won't let you try the merchandise go elsewhere.

We know you Auburn Diva. . .

We just got you as a friend on myspace.

I must say, we like the SM58 wireless as well. It has done wonders for our show. Plus for a show like ours it takes us "off the leash"

And yes, they will let you demo the packages at the store. I mean after all your the one throwing down $190 - $300 per mic, so they BETTER let you try it out.

Just snap your fingers 3 times in Z formation when you ask!
