Well, if you disconnected the HD and then reconnected the cabling, it could have been the ribbon cable this whole time. Or gumed up, rusted up connections from that West Virginy mountain dew. (Might look into a new cable if you think it's alive now.)
Gotta have good data flow through yer cables and stable enough electricity, or else all manner of weird stuff can happen.

Hey Zip

We bees on here at the same time .. ..Man , I cant find the HD in this thing??.. I cant find anything that looks like what Andragon put up??..Well, the only thing that resembled the HD (in MY mind) was this deal that had the fan on it..BUT, it only had a tiny plug going to it...I try to unplug some big stuff but in was too tough...NOW, at this point, I havent run Cool edit yet AND Im not quite done moving files to the other puter..Dang , thats time consuming at 2 gigs at time.. ..Once thats done , IM GONNA TEST THIS B... :P ...AND RUN THE CRAP OUTTA COOL EDIT..I gotta get to the bottom of this before the cow jumps over the moom, and dorthy comes back to Kansas...AHHAAHEEHOOAHUBABBBB sold to america... :P

*sigh*
Earth to John: STOP RECORDING, MIXING AND FIDDLING WITH THE COMPUTER TURNED ON.

Okay, now that it's off AND COOL EDIT IS NOT RUNNING, open the case. Never EVER let a drop of water or cleaning sprays n all that sh*t that they tell you to buy. If anything it's a 100% dry piece of cloth.
Your best bet, however, is a blower. Take it out in the backyard n let the dust out.
The hard disk doesn't have a fan or anything other than what you saw in the pic. It's standard and it's been that way since 1996 (when I first laid hands on a PC 8) )

Anyways, I hope you get to transfer your files. For your hard work's sake...

Man....This is one bad trip...Did I imagine all this?..I gotta stop eatin those tombstone pizzas and MY homemade brownies at 4am..

Andragon and Mike,

Well, shes run all day, done some mixing and heavy effecting in Cool Edit, had a thumb drive stuck in her a big part of the day suckin sessions out of her for backup..AND not one knock, or noise outta the way..Internets been super fast...SOOO, I think I know what might have happened..I have a Alesis data disk I still use (dont laugh it still does the job for sequencing.. )...When the humdity gets 80% down here ,that unit has been known to go nuts and not read the floppys and says theres bad file data when theres not.. AND it makes that knockin sound too..I take a hair dryer to it and all is well..SO, the only thing I can figure is too much moisture????...When I took the shop vac to it , it must have dried it out...NOW, I still have run Gtr Zips test on it yet..A buddy is comin over tomorrow so Ill FINALLY get to see where the HD is..AND run that test...

Man , its unreal that moisture would the D drive to disappear and the all the crazy antics she pulled...GEEZ, imagine what shes like if she really gets her panties in a bunch... :P

Stay tune for the test results to see if the HD has VD...

hey kid, gtzip, andragon.

brownies... hehe, you've been watchin that 70's show too much.

um, one thing kid: I would def advise that you do NOT use the shop vac... the static elec that that thing will likely creat will likley whipe your entire hd...it's nothing short of a miracle it hasn't allready...
it may have been moisture that screwed it up but I doubt it... (I used to live in wi where we regularly experience 95% humidity!)
I'd be more inclined to think it was the cable...
my next q: did you take the shop vac to the entire computer???!!!
that is crazy... you are going to fry your graphics card, your hd's, your chipset... the whole kittenkaboodle...

http://www.afrosoftweb.com/shop/images/ide_cable.png
here's a pick of an ide cable... there should be one of these hooked up to the mother board (that big thing with all the soldered chips on it)... and then plugged into the hard drive(s), and another plugged into the back of the cdrom drives or dvd drives (depending on what you have), and a similar but slightly smaller one hooked up to the floppy drive...

http://www.anewshop.com/dvdrw/22.jpg
here's a pic of the cd/dvd drives you might have

http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/ide-ribbon.jpg
here's a closup of the end of an ide cable

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASRo ... s/pata.jpg
here's a pic of a typical ide port on the motherboard... note the little "ide1" painted next to it...

http://www.overclockers.com/tips1186/02 ... eeving.jpg
here's a pic of a tipical computer... usually the hard drives are going to be below the cdrom/dvd drives and the floppy drive... in this picture, on the right side... from top to bottom it looks like they have
cdrom/dvd drive
cdrom/dvd drive
floppy drive
cdrom/dvd drive
hard drive
hard drive
and then below that you can see the case speaker at the bottom.

does this help?
hope so.
cheers

Do what you think is best, John. Even the cold pizza.

Speaking of PC trouble... Today I managed to clear up a whole bunch of spyware, adware, trojans, and 1 worm (yea I know). Frickin' annoying, but at least I got everything running smoothly AND I got a nice System Restore point, marked 12th of July (today) 8)
Can I get an Amen?!

Dude, I really wanna get that 8)
Every one that I tried sucked majorly. Either the navigation was horrible OR it would store the "image" in weird places. And the worst of all: uses up way too much space for the "image."
But then again, I don't pay a penny towards the corporates' pockets 8)

Thanks. I guess I was interested in that stuff when I was a lot younger. Plus, it's more of a game of strategy (like chess) when it comes to fighting off contaminated files/viruses. You really gotta know your enemy. One of em even "offered" me a "report" of its own virus; i.e. the virus said:
Windows Security Alert
Windows Security has found a number of threats. Level of Risk: 5, blah blah blah click here to get rid of em
Sounds tempting, isn't it? Well, it was the cunning adware thing. If I hadn't known all Windows Security messages by heart, I might have been fooled.
Why do I keep typing long posts?.... rhetorical question.
Peace out.
