First the bassists piss you off. Now singers too? hehe
Yea I can relate to that. Went to jam/audition at some dude's months ago.. went pretty well.. we got along.. then a WEEK later after he "talked with the rest of the band" .. he says they're not ready.. I was like wtf? .. if you're not ready, don't say that you're looking.
Anyways.. this is the rants thread.. I like it

I'll pipe in here.

On you guys profile. if you do covers then list them. Im not talking about the songs that you know the intro riff to, Im talking about all the songs that you can play from start to finish. SOme of the people on here are real vague on their profiles. I had one guy contact me that had a blues outfit going. He said if you will join we need about 2-3 practices and we will be gigging in a month. I show up and these guys cannot make it thru one stinking song. I mean RedHouse, and you say you play blues and cant get thru it.

I know I know this has turned into a rant.

Actually lately I have gotten tapped into some real players and I guess Im in 2 groups and even have a couple of other groups using me as an alternate guitarist when their normal guys have issues. So I guess life is good here, well musically anyway.

I'll leave with a stupid story I heard over the weekend. Ive got a couple of high school buddies and we got together sat night, basically wound up staying up all night. One of the guys went home and forgot what he had done. Wakes up in his chair at home and has noodles hanging out of his nose. He said his tray and plate were on the floor, all nice and neat. Well we all wound up going to the lake yesterday and riding a boat all day. We ran into some more friends and Willie is telling the noodle story to anyone that will listen. We run into a DJ who will remain nameless, who says that nothin, I got all wasted a couple of weeks ago and woke up in my chair. I looked at my hands and they were orange, then I realize Im naked and my weiner is orange too. Thats when I saw the empty Cheeto package on the floor.

And you think musicians are screwed up, think about my DJ buddy the next time you eat some Cheetos!

That totally cracked me up.. omg. I'll never eat Cheetos the same way now .. I don't eat em anyway, but yea.

We had big problems finding a vocalist/frontperson for months.
What gets me is that they dont even do any of the hard work such as learning instruments, owning and maintaining equipment...etc.

Then they walk in with a "my way or the highway" attitude...YUK

HAPPILY my drummer and I adopted these attitudes:
You can only sing IF you also play.
YOU pick what you sing well and in turn you LEARN other peoples stuff that they do well.
Lastly....NO front person.

We ended up with a 4 piece band with THREE vocalists that will kick most 6 piece band's butts.
It's only 2 weeks old and we have all the respect for each other you could ask for and a nights worth of material is already done.

I dont know if there is a moral here...but bypassing a front person certainly worked out for us anyways. As usual I'm talking "cover band" 'cause I like the extra cash.

You see, that's what bugs me bout non-vocalists. Exactly right there. That's what I was talking bout earlier.
You can sing if you play? What? It's not an instrument?! It's the hardest to master, fyi. And you can't exactly say: "Oh jolly I'ma go get myself some good gear for my vocals.. upgrade the strings too"

Here's a little different viewpoint.
A couple years ago I showed a bass-player friend of mine some complicated bass patterns to about a dozen of my songs. I do only originals; not one cover. It took a lot of practice for him to learn all the patterns, and I respect that . . . a lot.
And he sounded really good.
But there were a few reasons why I didn't want to play out with him, so, sadly, I had to cut the knot. I'm not going into why; he's a good guy, we're still friends, and so I'll leave it there.

Ok, so now I'm performing solo instrumentals, again.

Today he called me. He's hooked up with somone else, and was wondering if I wanted to open for them, and maybe he could sit in on some of my songs. I'd be paid, so I said, "Sure."

We'll see what his partner says, and I'll want to visit a few practice sessions first . . . but here's my point:

Don't always burn your bridges behind you. Stay friends.

It's almost always good to network, even with those who, for one reason or another - aren't top-notch . . .
Someone who you 'dis' may practice, improve, meet some really great musicians, hook up, - and later offer you a paying job.

Yea, I don't think I've pissed off any of the people I've worked with... except for that guy.. n that guy.. n his brother.. n son in law.. n that 70 year old lady.... I think I'm in trouble

Hi, I manage a female singer/rhythm guitarist. We have had issues with bass players, drummers and lead guitarists as well, like everybody else. Being in a band isn't as glamorous as the public thinks. Its hard on a female....she hasn't been used to the way males speak to one another. If she is direct, she gets labeled.

You MUST run your band as a business or else you totally doomed for failure.

Written communications on ALL issues works best...just get them in the habit and let them know everything is archived. A simple contract is better than no contract.

NOBODY likes band drama, most of which evolves from immaturity.

Anyway..bottom line is as in any relationship, communications is the key. Set up some kind of easy access communications system and you'll be glad you did.

Let me re-phrase that. If you find a great female vocalist with big boobs then you've really found something. If you find a great male vocalist with big boobs, hmm, I guess if you really need a singer that badly then I guess you really found something. Later...
