I just ordered a Rogue 8-string. It's kind of a lower end instrument, but I've always wanted to try the 8. Any experiences to share or suggestions as far as effects or techniques?

Also, a few years back, I experimented with a fretless bass. To be honest, my technique was not very good, and after a couple of years (of sitting in my closet) I ended up getting rid of it. Strangely, It didn't fuel my creativity the way I thought it would. I usually had to come up with bass lines on a fretted instrument, and then perform them on the fretless...anyway, I know there are a lot of bass players on here, and just wanted to get some thoughts.

Haven't had the opportunity to try out my stuff on a fretless, but I bet I could do SUMPIN, anyway. I DID do okay on a stand up fretless a time or two, playing bluegrass.

8 string? I dunno. Lemme know whatcha think of it. Never seen one, let alone play it.

You can get some full sound out of the 8 string. Work on clean playing style. I like using a pick for the 8 string. Then play with the EQ and amp settings. Works well in a trio.

Joeseph the guy Ive been playing with has a Hagstrom 8 string. We are ussually 3 piece so it fills up some space. He always uses a pick with his. From my perspective its just more strings to tune, but what do I know.

Yeah, I'm afraid I am going to have to improve my picking technique. I've been a fingerstyle guy for a long, long time. More tuning won't bother me-I play acoustic and electric guitars, as well as my Ibanez (6-string) bass.
Turns out my new toy is on back order. That sucks.

Damn dude, does your internet provider charge you by the keystroke? Or do you just really hate vowels and spaces.

I hear good reports about Rouge for the money.
Effects: Hmmm...8 string will sound chourusy already, so I would make sure you have a decent compressor instead.

And if you are insane, like myself, a cool Bass Overdrive is always fun
You can hear a mild overdrive on the first and last songs of my demo.

It all depends on the gerne of music you play. 8 strings are good for heavier rock and have that fuller, richer sound. If you want to check out a good 8 string player, go listen to some King's X.

I must admit that I never heard of King's X before, but I just checked out a couple of their you-tube videos. Great band! (the bass player wasn't useing the 8 string, however,).

It's been a few years, but I was heavy into King's X for a while. Great Band, crunchy sound and amazing harmonies...Doug Pinnick usually blasted out on a custom Hamer 8 or 12 string bass (and made it look easy)!
