so this weekend I decided to start going through my guitars and changing the strings/doing intonation/polish it up/general setup. I started with my ibanez les paul. it's a '77 or so... and the nut blew out on the g string. it was a nasty little blow out... the area where the string meets the nut - right near the first fret... had blown out and left my g strings intonation all wacked up and caused some buz.
so what did I do? replace the nut?
well, I didn't have a new lp nut laying around so... a little magic.
I took another nut I had laying around... and started sanding it to get a little "nut dust" going. then add in some super glue and wha-la... "nut paste".
I packed this nut paste into the void of material near the g string (being careful to tape off the first fret...) and let it dry.
once she was dry I filed the groove back down till the string sat at the original height. Presto chango...

then I got my strat out... when I first got this guitar I re-did the nut (it was way too high stock). I cut it a bit too low... and always wanted to redo it.... so I took a tiny flat head screw driver and "tapa tapa tapa"... and tapped the nut out. took the sm screw driver and made sure to scrape out any "old glue". Now a pro would have used a file... so I decided not to charge myself.
I snagged my new "graph-tech" nut and did a test fit... I could see it would need some sanding so... put on the low and high e strings and...
sand down, test, sand down, test.
two drops of super glue later and I had an all new "pre-cut" nut.

did the intonation on either guitar and like magic voodoo...
I could fret a c chord at the 15th and it sounded like heavon.

I don't know why I'm telling you this... oh yea, cause I like the sound of my own voice.

Hey Mr.Mike,

That ingenious nut repair kinda reminds me of my recent hernia operation, a little supplemental bondo to get the ol' ax "up and running"!

Howlin'

I used to use bondo.... and when I did I'd always sing:
"bondo, bondo, bon-DO"

"BALLS!" said the king, 'cause he had to.

"BALLS!" said the queen, 'cause if she had to, she could be king!

(this old line always reminds me of "Slick Willie" and "Hillie")
