Then I bought a Behringer 1204FX board to add some more headroom which was also cheap. I don't know much about this end of things, but it was easy to setup and use. Both the board and the interface have XLR and 1/4 inch inputs which is a nice feature as well.
I just run the mic to the board, then to the interface, then to the computer through USB 2.0 and this leaves plenty of headroom without having to run the trim too high on any channel and cause distortion through the recording. I don't know about firewire though although this interface has both capabilities...
I was thinking firewire cause it's much faster than usb2...
love that behringer stuff... it's a bit cheap in terms of knobs breaking etc... but they got sued by mackie for their preamp design... for a reason.
