Greetings all,

We wanted to ask all the fine folks here a question. But first, a little background;

On various sites, we post invitations to anyone who might be curious to visit us and of course, "have a listen". And we expect responses.., both good and bad. We aren't under any delusion that our music is better/worse than anyone else's, nor do we "advertise" it that way. In fact, we're almost always surprised if someone likes what we do enough to write us and say so! However, we reiterate; we expect BOTH negative and positive responses, and we know that not everyone will like what we do.

Anyway, here is a response we received, via EMAIL, from one who DID NOT like us. That in of itself isn't troubling, it's the WAY it (him/her) came across. So now we pose the question again; would this piss anyone off?

(Email copied as is)

Note: Notice the "introduction":

Dear kaiko breath..............

I checked out your I.T. samples and you know what ?
you thought wrong......I was not suprised :)!
pleasantly or otherwise.........but after taking your advice..........

"Stop by our page: www.myspace.com/indianterritorytheband for a "taste"..,"

it is obvious that you would be a perfect hybrid with another group
that goes by the name of S.H. just think, then your name would
accurately describe the so-called "taste" that you note in your ad.

p.s. - the only thing I found pleasant there was when I
hit the stop button on the demo player.
............oh ya ; .............peace.

Think we're over-reacting?

If you react at all, you're overreacting. The world is full of idjits & twits & idjits & twits, & you can't let them or thier "opinions" bug ya.

I'd laugh it off & erase it unless they were making violent threats or somesuch.

You're right of course.

However, we found it to be akin to someone walking up to you (or anyone else for that matter) and starting a critique of you and your music with; "hey, shit-breath..." I highly doubt any kind of civilized conversation can be had from that point forward. We are going to hear negativity in association with our music, and we can handle that. But don't walk up to me/us/you and start off something with an insult...

Heh heh, you have to admit that is a little funny

Seriously though, don't let something like this piss you off. There are so many jerks who can't get their ear around any music that is a little different.

I like you guys a lot. 8)

kinda like having a bottle flung at you (not that I would know).

you can't possibly ascribe any weight to that comment w/o first hearing the posters music...
most people with any amount of intelligence will make some attempt to be constructive when posting feedback... and not just make weak comedy at your expense, but then we live in a world cresting with stupidity.

I believe the best feedback you'll get on you music is from non-musicians... but then it will always be positive and seldom useful advice.

... so somewhere in the middle is the true, useful, and heartfelt advice.

yes, I would be upset if someone shot that response to me, but I'd have to take it in stride cause everyones entitled to an opinion.

Yeah bro just chill a little man. I myself like the fact that only musician types seem to like anything that I come up with on a whim because I write that way alot, but on the other hand I also write songs that everyone likes just to "fit in" at times. Don't be bummed because some idiot doesn't get what you're after, but rather be happy that someone was interested enough to listen. The way I see it is that it takes all kinds to make the world go round or we'd all be the same...Now wouldn't that suck? Keep your head up bro and "Dismiss The Cynics!" :D

There's no excuse for these dirtbags response. Probably jelous of someone who can really write and perform music. could also be racially motivated. Or maybe their Daddy was mean to them and Uncle Stinky pants did bad things to them that made them lash out at everyone else in the world. You cand say you don't care for someone elses stuff without being an as$. Some people get real brave hiding behind the internet.

Whoever wrote that to PI please don't bother to check out my stuff because I don't care what you think. You're obviously not a musician, your just a poser trying to make yourself feel better by cutting someone else down.

Thank you all for the feedback.

It wasn't so much the "critique" that was offered, it was the initial "opening-line" that got under our skin. As it was said earlier; an opinion can be offered without resorting to insults. We are quite prepared to receive our share of negativity-"not my cup of tea" as it were, hell we can tolerate "YOU GUYS SUCK!", but don't start that off with an unprovoked-somewhat personal attack.., that tends to degenerate the situation into thoughts of "un-civilized" behavior.

And, as is common practice with us, we like to make sure (as best as possible) of our place in a matter before acting/reacting, which is why we submitted this "quandry" before our colleagues and peers here on BM.

Peace.

I.T.

Have they got something better that they produced for anybody to listen to? Just remember this: commentary and dissent have now combined to form dysentery. Later...

Yeah, it DID take a nano-bit of intelligence to come up with S.H.+I.T.

Thank you for the kind words Koolin82 :D

Well, "they" whoever that is, did say that we (us) had run across "a gifted talent" and "someone with REAL taste" in the form of "them" and that "they" would know because "it occurs at every one of their rehearsals".

We have NO idea who "they" are. Which means we can't re-con their site/music, if nothing else, to see if their talent(s) would even warrant coming from such a lofty position...

We wouldn't care if "they" are all that and a bag of chips, problem is the tact/approach. Like Christopher Walken's character said in "Joe Dirt"; "whoa, your tone is all wrong. Say it like that again and I'll stab you in the face with a soldering iron!".

Feel us?

PS, Ive thouroughly enjoyed the music you guys have posted on here. Im jealous of you guys talent and the fact that you have the balls to play the type music that you do. Some people just get a kick out of stirring s**t up. Dont let them intimidate you.

 yea this is a funny one alright....
first off i wouldnt let it get ya down ps....if they start off with "hey sh*t head" or something to the likes ive found its best to stop reading and move on to something else...its going to be nothing more than a sh*t storm of abuse damning you ...your music and just about everything about you....its a sorry state of affairs but its as much a part of music as anything else....

ive learned that it takes a very thick skin to even try and make it in music...you can try as hard as you can...put your life and soul into something you believe in and even when you think you have something your really proud of.....then "bang" some f ucking bitter no-mark spews out a pig-f ucking barage of abuse about how it sounds or how you look or some s hit.....

so pay no heed ps......haters will always be there on the side lines...never in the action but hating anyone who is.

We are honored and humbled by all the words of encouragement.., Thank you all!

We'd like to think that we do have "thick skins", because this isn't the first time we've run across a detractor. And we totally expect that/them to come out of the woodwork. 99% of the time we let whatever is said, by whomever, roll off of us. But again, it is the lack of tact that we find disturbing. And before anyone says it; we know that in most cases, a lack of decency is the norm. But it is no less infuriating when an "observation" about us, true or otherwise begins with an insult. Some of us in this band don't respond well to that approach 8) .

We've ALWAYS subscribed to the view that musicians, on all levels, are one big brother/sisterhood. And even though we may not like a particular genre, or a band/artist, we would NEVER critique someone, much less venomously!

Live and let live. Or, to paraphrase it; Shut up and play!
