hello guys , good advice from the response posted by all the players so far. The first thing that needs to be ask is what kinda of music will you want the snare to fit sound wise? live perfomance? recording? all matter also. and dont forget your budgit. I personally own three snares two are ludwig and one is a slingerland. both ludwigs are stainless metal, one rocker seiries from the eightys that is wonderfull on all the differrant gigs Iever used it on from small beer bars to society jobs at country clubs it has adapted to the musical situation. the other ludwig Iuse for large loud venues outdoor shows and such its a mid 1990's supra phonic deep and cracky! the old slingerland is probably 1970's circa it was my first school band drum not fancy at all the type your parents rent while you take band at elemantary school warm sound but who am I kidd'n I haven't had it out of it's case in years just sentimental value and usfullness now their are so many great wood models and manufactures to choose from the only problem would be how much pocket green do you have to spend?to bad we can't rent to own like my grandparants did with that old band snare. thinking back that drum did sound pretty dam good.
