Mord
Years ago some of us went to the desert and shot various weapons into the wood planking in front of some old mine shafts. (you could tell when you hit that stuff).
We had a Mini 14 - fastest round by far (556 - seemed to hit like a ton of bricks), a 357 mag pistol (next fastest with hot rounds), a 9mm (+P) and finally an M-1 carbine - the slowest for some reason. However, the guy who owned the M-1 had scant knowledge of ammo so that may have been the problem.
Personally, I've always liked the M-1/M-2 Carbine series and never cared much about full auto anyway since even when I carried FN or AK I never used that feature. (It's a nice to have). I just like light weight firearms. But I've heard tales from Korean war vets that they far preferred the old Garands when shooting commies wearing winter coats...
Glenn - I'm not much on the bigger handguns since one tends to lose the sight picture after each shot. Good for robbing liquor stores or chasing burglars (I've only done the latter!

) and they are fun on the range - I loved that Clint Eastwood .44. For serious work I like a weapon that holds a big magazine so I can make the bad guys duck and stop shooting at me!
Here's a handgun story:
--------------------------------
I was at a range in Los Angeles frequented by Lawman types, practicing for my yearly cert. I was still playing at sec agent in those days and having just come off duty I was wearing a tactical jumpsuit. Looking cool and feeling cool!

In walks the range master with six enthusiastic Japanese tourists in tow. It turns out he has a set of what he calls the "Guns of Hollywood" including of course the .44 Mag, the Frontier Colt and so on.
One of the tourists approached me somewhat diffidently and said, "You have killed many men?"
I replied quietly, "Not many..."
