Hey Gang,

Ive been thinkin of gettin another SD? Been surfin around checkin out specs,woods, construction etc...Just wonderin what some of you guys are using...Whats are some of your favs that you've played and/or heard?
All opinions would be appreciated.

hmm, ALL opinions? Even non drummers?

well, I've listened to thousands of pro samples (bob clearmountain, phil collens set, I've samples aronoff/erskine/bissonette, black beautys, dw's, cocobolo's, nobleAndcooley, etc etc) and created thousands of recordings of individual snare shots...

and the one snare sound that I keep going back to is a reasonably priced Rodgers Dyna Sonic. I don't know if it was just a good recording (I had it mic'd in 3 places) or if it's just one fantastic sounding snare or if it was just tuned right or if the stars aligned and a vodoo ritual ordained it... but that is the one snare sound that I like best out of my collection.

Dunno what brand he uses, but this drummer I've been working with has a piccollo snare that just CRAX!

Whenever we do a song that has a gun reference in it, he pops it loud...lol...the singer's doing Folsum Prison Blues...

He jumps every time...I laughed so hard the 1st couple times I almost fell down.

He even does it in quiet songs like "Knockin' On Heaven's Door"...too funny...he gets the audience startling too

I use a Mapex Maple Black Panther and it smokes. I agree with the Rogers Dyasonic remark posted earlier too for vintage gear, which I'm into. I collect Rogers. The COB/chrome over brass is good, but for a real piece of art try to find a wood Dynasonic; they are quite valuable & rare. I also have a 68' WMP Slingerland I bought off of Ebay, It has a wonderful sound too. I have a 58' Rogers that is valuable, the top head lug tunes the bottom head also,but sounds like dog poop. Yamaha and Pearl both make great snares these days and there is always the tried and true DWs. G'Luck on your snare qwest. SJ

Thanks for the responses..FUNNY Story Philby..It would be HARD TO STOP that prank NOW wouldnt it.I used to do kinda the same thing with a Synare (first synth drum)(rememeber those Oldtimers)..Yeah , with all the sounds and attacks available to our ears nowdays whether they be real or sampled, can pose quite a challenge finding what your lookin for...Especially for a neurotic like me who doesnt like alot of choices..

I liked my 1967 Ludwig snare ALOT.. damn that thing sounded sweet.

Bastard stole it with the rest of my kit... I had the original Hardcase, stand and pad for it too....

just listen to Metallica's St. Anger... and do NOT do that.

Yamaha Beechwood custom (Sonny Emory)
4 1\2 x 15 with yamaha's hardend snare's.
It is a great all around snare.I use a powerstroke 3 coated head..
This snare has great projection,easy to tune hardly any ring.
I have a 6x15 maple DW it is my backup...Great projection Very LOUD.
lots of ring with an Emperor coated with one (little) piece of ductape for ring control..I am NO TAPE fan whatsoever but some times its nessesary for a little piece somewhere on the outerside of the head..

I've been using a '66 Ludwig 5" Supraphonic & a '75 Ludwig 6-1/2" Supraphonic for all my gigs and recordings. They have never failed me.

I've always been partial to a marching snare. Nothing beats it onstage, only snare I've ever seen you WILL hear every time. The catgut snares, rather than coiled steel, sound great to me, a couple of our high school drummers used those so I could compare, always liked them. I think it's actually twisted leather but not sure, usually called catgut anyway...

Never even though about a marching snare onstage, till a fill in drummer showed up in Texas with one. Loved it...the thing sounded great, and nobody had trouble hearing the snare all night, and we didn't mic it. The whole band liked it really well. I've always wanted to see drummers using marching snares ever since, there's just no comparison.

John...was with a band yrs ago that did the Huey Lewis song "Walking on a Thin Line"...I'd sampled a shot from my 30/30 into my Korg DSS1, & when the line came "taught me how to shoot to kill," I hit the keys & POW!

1/2 the ppl on the dance floor dropped to the floor! I guess it sounded a bit too real.

another one of those "ooops" moments, for sure.

I hadn't told the band what I was gonna do...boy they were pissed! The bar owner wasn't exactly pleased, either.

But I was laughing me butt off at it the whole time. I don't think my apologies were taken seriously.

What year is your kit? If it's a 66 it has been taken care of very well so the picture tells...Very nice!!!

Great discussion goin here...Yall keep it up...Yeah , Philby believe it or not, that was one of the tunes I use the synare on for that one second that had to count...I had beat that rubber pad over time so bad that by the time that tune had came out 83-84???, Id wore out the contact, "trigger",so I didnt always get the gunshot... Yeah, the drummer can alway use a good crackin snare to get the rest of the band to PAY ATTN. and shut up ...
I had some old ludwig kits that I got rid of yrs ago..I wish Id payed more attn to what I had...I didnt care about that stuff back then.

I had a set of Simmons a long while back (mid 80's). I used the SDS-1 for a second snare with the chips and there was one called big hall wooden snare. It had a lot of crack! I used it on the intro to the MR MR song on my profile and on another J. Cougar song - ROCK in the USA (which I can't load yet as I've reached my max., till I eliminate one). I'd hit it on the line... "And all the drummers go crack, boom, bam !!!"

Yeah , I do rememeber the SDS-1..I knew nothing about them at the time, but had to play them at a house job 3 nites a week ...The keyboard player set them up got the sounds he wanted and I just played...Had an octapad too..Hated it..
First song I ever played on a fully electronic kit was Caribbean Queen...I remember how weird it felt and how I really couldnt use any technique.Couldnt do a press roll.It was like hittin a table top..People were lookin at me like "are you makin those drum sounds":?: Looked quite radical in a dance club for 1984. :..Forgive me, I cant help talkin about the old days..I used to play down your way quite a bit..Ruston, Alexandria,Lake Chuck, Monroe, Lafayette etc.I was a happenin 4-5 nite a week area of steady giggin back then...
