Musician Gear & Tech Discussion

I was looking at one of these the other day.
I listened to it, online, and it sounded alright, with a fairly wide range of sounds.
If you have actually used one of these, what can you tell me about it?

If you have NOT used one of these, then, please don't tell me it sucks, and I should buy XYZ brand for $800.
And, I don't want to get into a discussion about how "live drummers are the only way to go . . . "

So, has anyone actually used the $100 Zoom drum box?

Haven't used it, but imo, Zoom products are some of the best for the bux, RM. I have two pedals, one for guitar & one for bass...Zoom makes stuff easy to use, & easy to program.

The only complaint I ever had about them is that they are kinda...well...plasticky frail little things for actual road work.

I still use 'em, though, & only ever had to replace the guitar Zoom once.

I wouldn't have any reservations at all about buying one o/l without trying it. I think thier stuff is that good.

on the upside:
I have a rt323... I like it a lot... I love the pad layout... much better design than a dr5/707/mpc etc. It's easy to play like a piano or like a drum set.

on the downside
They are made kinda cheap and the orig 123 was notorious for breaking right away... but my 323 has held up to 5yrs of me beating on it.
the sounds are a bit weak, for the most part, but most drum machines are...
I think the boss dr707series(606 too) have better sounds... and better quantize... but the layout is lame and they are quite a bit more coin.

if you are going to use the sounds... I'd find a used 707/606... if you just want to fire other sounds using the cool pad layout go with the zoom.

Why not consider picking up a 90's era Yamaha synthesizer "work station" like my own beloved SY-55? I purchased mine new back in the early 90's and am still playing it , live gigs , and as a totally self contained home recording studio. The song "Caledonia on my profile is totally the 55.(except for the crooning' , of course). I paid well over a grand for mine , and never had any regrets. They can now be had on E-Bay for around $200. The Yamaha AWM sound is still second to none, in my opinion.
You can step program, record riffs in live time, edit, quantize, overdub, create sounds ,etc. AND there is no better drum sound! (The sound quality of my recording is poor because I took it from an old cassette recording). It may take a while to learn how to use it, but it would be well worth the effort, and you would be getting a whole lot of "bang for your buck".

Power supply and pedal are extra.

It'll take a while to learn how to program . . . I still haven't even heard all the preset patterns . . .
