Zenith - it works both ways - you want examples of the band's live abilities, they want examples of yours. Too many 'wannabes' around. A good indication is a profile that has no pictures of the person actually performing live - oops, like your profile. No live pics, no videos, no audition!

Of course it works both ways but I'm not going to be the one asking for video footage as I'm probably not going to bother to listen to it. I'll form my opinion when I actually get in a room and hear with my own ears what the band sounds like. Music is a business and like any business it's boils down to supply and demand and honestly you guys probably need me alot more than I need you. Obvious exception if your band is playing on a higher professional level and not just grinding out the bar scene making 50-100 bucks a night.

Thought experiment try posting an ad in craigslist asking for a keyboardist see how many responses you receive, then try posting an ad as a keyboardist looking for a band and tell me how many responses you receive. Truth is there's exponentially more guitarists than there are keyboardists, and there are alot more bands looking for keyboardists than there are keyboardists willing to lug around all their expensive gear to an audition. Feel free to be as critical and picky as you please among your fellow guitarists, you can't throw a stone anywhere outside and not hit one. If your rule is I must submit a video with a complete profile in order to play music in the same room with you then no thanks, ask the other 4 gigging keyboardists in town maybe they'll be willing to jump through your hoops if they can find the time.

so, you'd rather waste time packing, loading, unloading, setting up your gear... and then spend more time, and gas money driving to an audition.... than simply figuring out ahead of time if the band is good enough to warrant that amt of your time and work?

not me....no way i'm gonna waste any time doing that before i have some idea about whether this is a situation I want to be involved in. i want to know these guys can play before i waste any time.

will i absolutely be able to ascertain that from seeing some video....well, i'll certainly know that if they suck or can't tune their instruments that it's NOT anything i wanna waste my time going to check out.

same for anyone who's auditioning for one of my bands. i don't want to waste MY time, my bandmate's time, or the time of someone who isn't competent enough to qualify. life's too short and there still ain't NEARLY enough hrs in the day.

and attitude goes a long way as to who i'm gonna want to work with. if you believe YOU or the instrument you play is more important than anyone/anything else.....thanks, but no thanks.

how about the other keyboardists on c-list who got a CASIO from Wal-Mart for christmas and after two months of playing think they're good enough to play in my band?

it's a simple enough thing to do that takes less than 5 minutes of anyone's time....supplying a link to a video of you playing somewhere. and the fact that it's a phone video is a PLUS for me. i don't want to see some slick video production or an MTV music video (how many musicians even have anything like that to share?)....i want to see you performing in a bar, restaurant, or any dive and see/hear that you can cut it.

and if you're auditioning for one of my bands...i'll happily send YOU video of us so you can see/hear what we're about... and then you can make an informed decision about whether you want spend YOUR time as well as my band's time going thru an audition.

if anyone thinks that's "jumping thru hoops", or they're too busy, or they're too important and special to take two min to do that.... it's not gonna be a good fit.

If they sound like cool people then sure I have no problem packing up my gear and just jamming. I love music, it's what I live for.. But I know my worth and you should know your band's worth. If you want to make this entirely about money and jumping through hoops, then your band best be in a financial position to make such demands. Otherwise I'm peacing the F'ck out.. I don't play on cheap casios, it's probably going to be losing financial proposition for me anyways with all the wear and tear on my gear and my vehicle. That being said I'd rather hit up an open mic and play with people who are just doing it for fun. After years of grinding it out at the bar circuit I've realized that the reality of the situation is you probably need me alot more than I need you.

Also a phone video with suckass audio quality might act as a detriment to arrogant and hyper critical judges of live music performances whether the tuning is out by 4 Hz or not..and etc makes a difference as to where the cheap phone video was shot? Pizza is still just that. Pizza...

trust me...i know my worth. and i know the worth of my bands. but most importantly i know what my TIME is worth....and that's EXACTLY why i'm careful with it.

i think you missed my point. it's got NOTHING to do with money. it's got EVERYTHING to do with time. (hmmm....then again "time IS money"). and i choose not to waste time, or waste as little as possible by doing everything within my power to assess a perspective musician or band i'm interested in playing with.

that's simple due diligence. and that due diligence is an important part of being a pro. weeding out the wannabes.

I don't know if this following scenario is relevant or not. but how many times has somebody judged wrongly a band is kickass after hearing their album or a YouTube video of them playing and sounding flawless. Only to go to their live gig at the pizza joint and is nothing but a slop fest..listless with no direction.you can not judge a video that is perhaps the 8th take as being genuine when watching a live act not a phone video live act is to be understood as valid..BS jpkjerk

Disagree with me all you want but at the end of the day I will have 5 bands chomping at the bit to play with me if I place an ad on craigslist. Meanwhile you'll still be looking for a keyboardist 2, 3, 6 months down the line.

What I have a problem with are your gross exagerrations, if someone hasn't assembled video footage to send to you then they must not be worth your TIME. I have neither the time nor the inclination to meet your expectations of me as a musician all so I can grind out setlists at bars for 50, 80, 100 dollars a night. More to the point I simply don't need to do so, it's literally a waste of my effort and financial resources when I can just as easily find 20 guitarists just like yourself at any hole in the wall open mic night who will be just as eager as I am to sit play music with me and aren't jaded.

phone videos don't lie.

what you see, what you hear...is what's being played. it shows whether someone or their band can play. or not.

it's that simple.

of course, there are always those who know better than sharing any videos because they know they don't have the stuff. and that says it all. they'll talk themselves up, but they lack the stones to share what they can offer. talk is cheap. but in the end it's just talk.

give me someone who's not embarrassed to share what they and their band can do over someone who just runs their mouth but knows they can't back it up anyday.

Thanks man. I'm not trying to come off as a douche, quite the contrary, it's not about money for me. I don't care what customary or standard practice in the bar scene, I have my own set music etiquette that I've formed after years of paying my dues. Feel free to write me off because I'm not very good at the recording process and have little to desire to learn, your loss guys. At the swap meet busking..we never say to somebody wanting to "sit-in" ..no' your guitar sucks your first few notes plucked ate God-awful. ANF you have no star quality in your casual appearance.. Therefore we have no use for you as a valid human being musical type.. I believe only azzholes and arrogant azzholes would treat other musicians that way

i play with four working bands right now. trust me, i have nothing to be jaded about. none of them are looking for a keyboardist. nor ANY musician who believes THEY or THEIR instrument are more important and valuable than anyone else. (yikes)

"assemble video footage"??? .....what working and gigging musician doesn't have some video that his girlfriend shot on her phone at a gig? if that takes an inordinate amt of your time to share w me.....yikes.

and what exactly am i "exaggerating"? before i spend hrs checking out a situation or musician i'd rather spend 5 min of my time deciding if you're worth it. and seeing a video of you at a gig or a band prct helps me do that.

you have people lining up and begging you to play with them because you own a keyboard and they don't want to know for sure that you can actually play? good for you.

but if someone called me up to play bass w them w/o wanting to fully investigate that i can ACTUALLY PLAY.....but instead wanted me to play w them because i OWN a bass....???? hmmmm, their lack of due diligence (and desperation) would raise a red flag.

it's simple.... i'm not gonna waste time on you or any musician because you OWN a keyboard or ANY instrument. show me you can PLAY that instr....THEN we can move on to the next bit of biz.

that makes zero sense. but we all choose to spend our time as we see fit. me, i choose to waste as little time of mine as possible w a musician or a band that isn't worth it. and by checking out a video that HELPS me do just that.

if anyone thinks they're too good and above that simple thing, sharing some video.....i'll likely just write them off as a prima donna with their nose up in the air who believes their $hit doesn't stink.

hey, you've got something that works for you? fair enough. but, understand that i do as well. and though i've wasted time on situations that didn't warrant my time....i've also weeded out a lot of wannabes who didn't have the stuff. and that's the whole point of asking for video proof that someone can play.

your feelings being hurt, your ego being bruised because you're above having to submit video aside....it IS a time tested way to weed out players from wannabes. and that's the whole point here.

like i said....if you have people ringing you up 24/7 begging you to play w them...good for you. (no sarcasm there....really, more power to you.) but the idea that there is anything wrong w using every tool at your disposal to determine whether or not someone has "the stuff"......? if you still don't get that....then there's nothing more i have to say.
