Tried tapewound 1st, cuz that's what was on the bass...grew to dislike 'em cuzza the lack of sustain

Next bass I got had flatwounds on it when I got it...they're slippery to me & I didn't really like the sound...they were kinda deadish

Now I use roundwounds exclusively, & cuss at the raw worn-down calouses when I slide up & down, but watchagonnado...I'm used to 'em!

Bass strings are so expensive...it ain't like guitar...you can pay $10 a set for Martin bulk strings or way over my pricerange to get the "best" available...so it's hard to experiment...if I come across a bassist that uses 1/2 rounds, I'll ask him if I can try it out...never saw one in a music store strung with 'em

My Favorites are Fender Pure Nickel Rounds, but they are hard to find in medium light 5 string sets.
Juststrings .com has them, but Iv'e never seen a store with them.

mistermikev wrote:on my fretless and on my pbass I have tapewound. I like the way they sound... they don't get grungy from finger goo, they last forever. I haven't changed my string in ages. They don't wear down the fret or beat up the fretboard as much either. I like rotosound when I'm going for really slappy popy stuff, but I can't say enough about the tapewound fender strings. I personally love them. I don't think they come in five string tho. Flatwounds themselves are nice for a jazzy sound but I found they don't really sound nice for slap pop, but are great for fingerstyle.
just my 2 cents.
oh, yeah, and the flatwounds are black so on a guit with black hardware they look killer.

I agree

I think maybe I am the only one in the world who thinks this...But I really prefer flatwounds for popping and slapping...The rounds sound to icky and bright and Sinefeld to me, I guess it's just a preference though

I have used tapewound for years, mellow when you want that, slap easy, and can punch if you want them to.

and NO SQUEEK
