Bono is a good musician and a devout Christian.

Notice he doesn't use his Catholicism in his music like chocolate in his cookies.

His music is just plain good. (if you like that genre and I do)

He is not trying to convert you, he is out to do his thing and little else.

I have 100% more respect for a guy that believes one thing or another, but doesn't try to ram it down your throat like a river baptism on Sunday.

You wanna be a preacher, go preach. You wanna play music, go play.

Thanks for the resassurance! :) I'm careful about both the discussions on religion as well as the words I choose when I do decide to engage in them, as some people, myself included occasionally, get particularly heated...we are all aware of the wars going on all through history and currently. We all know many a man has begun a "holy" war over religion, and this seemed to get a little heated earlier on...I did not want to spark it again :)

Im not a christian and I really despise the Jehovas Witnesses that so arrogantly knock on my door...

I don't worship any devil or practice any evil ways..

I try to be the best person I can be, treat people the way I'd like to be treated etc...

I live my life like my past loved ones lived theirs so I end up wherever the hell they did...

Getting back with my family is all that really matters.. No sense in me living a "christian" life when none of them did. I'd be in heaven all alone.. lol

I don't jive with "in your face" kind of prosetylizing myself.

I can think of three great old rock songs that had a biblical theme that anyone could appreciate, lyrically and musically. They all were mainstream a.o.r. type rock And not labeled as anything else

Pride of Man (Quicksilver Messenger Service)

All You Zombies ( The Hooters)

Song of Job (Seatrain)

I'd bet we could think of a whole bunch more.

Wishbone Ash had Christian overtones as well, and I still give their music a spin'

Much, if not most "Classical" music was commissioned by the church.

As I mentioned previously on another thread, one of my favorite choral pieces is Ralph Vaughan William's Mass in G miner.

Good music is good music, and to deprive oneself of any of it on religious grounds is self defeating in my opinion.

Spiritual freedom to all, BandMix brothers and sisters,

I discovered a great way to handle religious missionaries of all kinds.

When they come knocking, answer the door totally naked and ask them what they want. I've tried it. They are gone in seconds and they don't come back.

Yeah, this world is in turmoil over religion. I debate so much about this subject that it becomes absurd after awhile. I think people just need to get along despite our differences. But once more, everyone is entitled to their opinion - that is as long as we can discuss it in a mature, intellectual, manner, without blowing our corks.

Peace out, GuitarAnatomy.

I couldn't agree more...I have worked very hard over the years to learn how to not blow my cork over these things - and I believe I am a better person because of it. I also enjoy a good debate, but not when people lose it! We also all base our beliefs on our own personal life experiences, and there's no changing that.

Amen to that brother! :D How about :
"God Gave Rock and Roll To You" by KISS
"When The Children Cry" by White Lion
"Quicksand Jesus" by Skid Row (for the Desert Storm soldiers I think...)
and of course, "where the Streets Have No Name" by U2 along with many others from them.
I also really like a good blues tune, and a christian band called MercyMe does one I like called "One Trick Pony". 8)

I just worry that after they've taken smoking out of the bars, they'll try to turn 'em into churches...that, for me, is a huge no-no

LOL@PHILBYMON..

Lord (please all of you turn your hymnal to pg. 45 which is conveniently enough "STOP DRAGGING MY HEART AROUND"), please teach us to be kind to our brethren and be considerate to all. And please do not forget your waiters and waitresses, speaking of that here comes the collection plate. lol

We'll be taking a 5 minute intermission to compose our holy spirits and to drink some spirits as well. Be right back, don't you leave the house of God during happy hour! (else you'll miss the drink specials)

Greetings,

A very interesting thread filled with everything we've come to enjoy and dislike regarding religious discussions. In my time on this planet, I've lived to see several perspectives. At one point in time, I was agnostic, then a very fervent atheist. But I had an experience which opened my eyes to the reality of God. It changed my life forever. Since then, I've tried to walk the road set out before me. An aspect of religion that bothered me when I was an atheist still bothers me just as much today: people who claim to know God can be arrogant and un-loving toward others. In their struggle to prove they're right, they offend most people and often defeat the purposes they're claiming to represent. To me, this is an original sin: trying to be like God. Yes, I am guilty of acting this way too from time to time (is now one of those times?). As I struggle to overcome my own arrogance and desire to be "right", I've gradually become more comfortable with the notion of "not knowing" all the answers. I leave it to God and just try to love Him and my Neighbor with all of my Heart, Soul and Mind. This is enough work for a lifetime. If Christians make God and the Church so patently offensive that we drive most people away, we have failed in our mission to spread the Good News. That's right, it's Good News, not "you're all gonna go to Hell because you don't believe like I do". Jesus is soooo not like that! We should stop trying to be "right" and let God sort it all out. It has been said that there will be people in Heaven we never would have expected, and others that we thought would definitely make it but aren't there. In my very liberal Christian perspective, I hold out hope that many more will be there than some would try to lead you to believe. I believe it's a big place with infinite room!!!

Now, in answer to the topic question : Christians Playing in Bars?

My band has discussed this and I really don't want to. The argument has been made that this is where we can "reach people". But, I'm not convinced that it's all that effective most of the time. Besides, I have my own issues that God has been helping me with, so it's not a good environment for me personally. But to say to others that they definitely should not, again in my somewhat humble opinion, is like playing God. I have a friend who is doing missions work overseas in Europe. He goes out and plays in pubs all the time. He just plays his music and most people don't get offended or even care about the message. But a few people have come up to him afterwards and asked about God. So, in his experience, it sometimes works. Who are we to say how God will reach people? He reached me and I was NOT receptive!!! Of course, it took a LOT to get my attention! Most people who knew me at the time couldn't believe the changes I went through. But then again, I had something really eye-opening happen to me. I experienced an answer to an unspoken prayer through a call and response with God!

My story is published here :

http://christianity.about.com/od/miracu ... timony.htm

Now, let the flaming begin! Just kidding... or not... Freewill is the best gift of all, eh? Thanks for reading and no matter what you believe, I hope you choose to flee the darkness and seek the light, wherever you may find it. I trust God to work it all out.

Peace,
Paul Britt
