Just wanted to say that I think it's RIDICULOUS that there ARE profiles on the site without a profile pic...

There's absolutely NO reason whatsoever these things should be found to be missing on ANY profile on BM if you are SERIOUS about your music and/or looking for a gig. Just some friendly advice for those who don't understand that managing your profile in this way quickly gives the first impression of...."waste of time"

What a coincidence--I feel exactly that way about profiles that don't include sound clips. You see, I base any potential interaction entirely on how folks sound--not how they look. Yeah, yeah, Yod makes a good argument vis-a-vis the marketing aspect and all that...but if you can't play, what does that matter? Nor do I have any great fear of strangers. If someone asks me to do a session in some dark alley after midnight, my people skills are honed enough to take a pass (past my bedtime), but if they reserve some time in a local studio, I'll show up. If they can play. Which I wouldn't know from a photo.

Interestingly, the only folks I know who can play the music I like to play (in tune, in time and in the pocket) are mostly old geezers--like me--who haven't survived lookism and who think a selfie is some strange new sex act. Fair enuff--let's focus on the music. I don't care what bands they've worked with or where they've been ('cept when it's story time), just that they can play it now. This ain't no dating site and I ain't lookin' to get horizontal. I just wanna play some good music.

Like Charlie Daniels once said 'bout Elvin Bishop: "He ain't good lookin' but he sure can play." Works for me. Maybe I'll find enough of those old geezers to start a band. We'll call it "The Ugly F**ks," and market ourselves as the 'ugliest band in Tampa.' If that doesn't draw in the rubes, I don't know what will.

i agree that you really can't tell much about a person's playing abilities from a photo....but if i see a long haired dude in spandex playing an 8 string hockey stick headstock gtr w skull and crossbones inlays....i can pretty much tell we're not gonna be the best fit.

likewise for a goth guy or gal in makeup and tons of piercings.

and then there's my "freak" radar that i need to satisfy.....no, you can't ALWAYS tell if someone is a freak, weirdo, or a doofus from a photo...but ya know what? SOMETIMES you can. when i see a profile w no pic...it does make me wonder why. is this person trying to hide something?....or......?????

granted..no music IS worse and there's no excuse for that.

my druthers....i really prefer seeing video of someone performing. that way i know that what ya see is what ya get.

That's some specious logic there. While you're takin' selfies and expending all that energy developing/establishing a look, I'm in the practice room, the studio or at the gig, workin' on my sound. That's why folks come to my gigs. And why folks who check out my page here (assuming we're musically compatible) get in touch and ask me to sit in w/ 'em. If uploading pics is the primary task--as you say--maybe music isn't the best path to be following.

I mostly bypass the folks who don't post any music (that includes those who post lots of pics), but you can tell a lot just by reading what they say. If they express an affinity for a genre that doesn't fit in w/ what you want to do or list musical influences that are totally at odds w/ yours...move along. For my purposes, if they post a clip where they're playin' some good jazz, I can overlook the long hair (after all, that would make me a hypocrite) and spandex (altho I might suggest a more suitable alternative). Or a goatee and shorts. (Ha!)

If a picture is worth a thousand notes, I'd say your focus is significantly misplaced. I do know a few folks who are somewhat attractive and would love to be in a band. Can't play a lick, but based on your logic, that shouldn't matter. They'll be happy to supply as many pics as you want.

If you're passing on profiles just because they don't have pics, I'd say you're missing something. Quite a lot, actually.

On the other hand there are some folks so ugly that they can't afford to keep replacing broken cameras. Not their fault that they don't post pics.

Then there are some musicians that get ragged on just because they never post any music. Then after they do post some of their music the folks who were ragging on them regret nagging them.

First.....you are totally full of sh*t. Don't try to make yourself look as if you have the market cornered on the in's and out's of making connections.....because you don't. You do have a gift for bragging however.....but I'm not impressed by your claims to fame....your bullshit counter points......or advice about how and when to spend your musical time.

If you need so much practice and studio time that you can't even spare a minute to post a pic......then maybe YOU are the one who should not be pursuing music. I don't EXPEND energy to develop/create a look for marketing as you stated....my pic took a total of THREE seconds to do......hardly an interference with ANY part of my music activities.


Also.....please don't insinuate that I'm so STUPID that I would actually base my opinions of someones musical ability based soley on a picture.................no audio needed.

To be more specific......since you obviously can't comprehend......I don't have issue with "pics that DO NOT show your face". I have issue with " NO PIC AT ALL"........because YEAH.....I like to know who I'm dealing with.....regardless of their playing and/or writing abilities.

My writing, playing and singing abilities.....as well as management of my studio, gig and practice time (whatever the scenario).....are not so desperately in need of EVERY second of my time that I can't possibly find a moment for a little detail about myself.....because some people DO like having that info....even if it's just a photo to start.


With that being said....if you do not agree.....more power to you as all I'm suggesting is some friendly advice for those who DO see the point and appreciate the tip.

It's your business how you present yourself in the end to others....but DO NOT attempt to make yourself look super intelligent by taking my talking points....twisting the meaning of them (as well as my words)....and trying to make it look as if they have no validity....it only makes you look like a jackass whose only concern is to piss someone off with their smart ass replies.

You have REALLY left me with a SUPER bad first impression of you by trying to reduce the validity of my talking points down to the subject of "vanity". With the smart ass attitude you have.....maybe you need to STAY in the studio....and never come out.

I don't think I said hello, but hello.. the stuff you are complaining about is fairly common , it boils down to a couple three members here feelingthey are superior to everybody else, and they in order to continue the illusion they know best, and are the most intelligent, hurl insults or talk down to everybody else to try and prove their dominance.. that is why we are down to 4 or 5 regulars now.. people tire of their antics and leave..
